Chaetodon ornatissimus

So... I'll be the jerk. That's a thin fish in that video. You can see a line where the dorsal fin starts, and the body ends. The stomach, while not pinched, is not full.

I give him credit for sustaining the fish. The fish isn't anywhere near thriving.

Then its a no go for you I guess. :lmao:

I personally would like to try a pair but I am a healthcare professional student and don't have the time to care for it. I won't attempt a fish if I know I don't have the time for it. So many darn exams. Maybe after my licensing exam...

Ok I will come clean the fish isn't at a LFS, it's at NYAquatics. I have been talking with him everyday about this fish and it started eating 4 days ago. I said LFS because I was undecided about the fish and didn't want someone reading this thread to take it out from under me. I have decided against getting it from talking with others and like I mentioned before a year and a handful of days isn't long term enough for me, even at 40$. He also has Arabians that are eating clam too, but again I'm very hesitant. I'm going to get one of the goldens he has and possibly the last yellow head he has. In a few weeks I will be getting a mitratus, since I just missed out on one. If someone gets this guy please post pictures and keep us updated. I don't have enough time to dedicate to this guy right now especially with my 11 month old daughter

I think that's the best example of one i've seen in captivity. It looks more promising than the video with the tiny butterflies eating clams, IMO.

I wish I knew Japanese, I'd be really curious to see what it is exactly that fish is eating and how he got it eating it.

There was a guy another forum named LeeBCA or something like that. He once hinted to knowing the secret to wheening these guys onto prepared foods, but he would never share it.

While I agree I'm simply pointing out that even "at best" it looks nothing like a truly long term thriving butterfly.

Oh I remember that b.s.... I got into it with him here... trying to spin it like there's some secret society of corallivore butterfly keepers.... ok. :)

Not to be a huge stalker, but I actually found a thread where he supposedly shared his secret with Rare Angels. I don't know him, but I know he's active on this site. I've thought about sending him a PM, but don't want to sound like a nutjob.

Rare angels has just posted recently on the personatus thread and Humaguy's thread under aggressive fish. I would reach out to him you have nothing to lose and he has nothing to gain from keeping it a secret if you will

This has really taken an interesting turn... I like it.

If you do indeed get a answer I would be interested to know what the secret is. The other guy that lives in japan used local caught clams that were readily available and feed them about 4 at a time several times a day on a acrylic plate I think it was

I'd call him out on this without seeing an actual video. Trust me, if they were eating he'd have a video up and they'd sell all those coralivores in a few seconds.

Really easy these days...just pull out the phone and take a video.

FWIW the one larvatus I tried, I think would have lived if a worked from home/was retired, because it did eat enough per feeding (minced fresh clam ONLY, BTW) to be full on weekends. But by Friday, it would be noticeably thinner. No clue what I would do about vacations though :-/

The only fish I would dream of spending that much time on again would be C. austriacus though :D

A perfect shot from Luiz:

Question for anyone here - Minced clam, shrimp paste, etc ... whenever I've tried some of these methods - the food floats away not only creating a huge mess, but everyone else eats what's intended for the BF - packing it into a clam shell, smearing it on a coral skeleton - even freezing it doesn't help much for me.

On another note ...

I had a plan to go to NYA earlier this week, but "work" happened & I couldn't. If I go soon, I could let interested parties know what I see & report back to you with first hand accounts. PM me. I asked Michael about a Lavartus & it looks like he's got them.

From what I can tell, I think that's why the guy is sustaining the ornate... alone, yet tied into a system (from what I can tell) to the mess doesn't ruin a small QT water quality.
