Gary, that shot of the echino mowing down the anthelia (or whatever those are) is really cool! Great looking echino by the way.

Do any of you guys have the Tyree "Blue Challice" echinopora? I got a frag of it awhile ago and it is pretty much brown (was brown when I got it), supposedly it gets it's best blue color with low light, but I'm not sure. Anyone have experience w/ it?

Mac, The first is a frag from the T.R.S. display.(looks different in my tank).
The second I got at PetsPlus yesterday. It's obout 4 x 3 + inches.
I payed $58 I think I got a deal. :D

You can see I put the Purple or Blue Echino under the Efflo to see if I can get better color under there.

Mothra, there's a LOT of people w/ the Blue Chalice... and I've yet to see one that's actually "blue". :D
Most people get a variation of green, or teal, or greenish blue. I put a piece off mine underneath an overhang that got hardly any light at all (just what reflected off the rubble, or so it seemed), and once, when heavily sedated, I thought I saw it look blue for a second.... but it was mostly brown and greenish colored, even then, too.
It must have looked blue when it came out of the ocean, because I sure haven't seen anyone capable of turning it blue since.

Yeah, I'd say you got a good score Mark.
The purple I've actually been giving more light to as of late... and it's liking it. Growing a little thicker. Seems to like a lot of flow too. It's up in Acro territory now. BTW, we should hook up, I'm home now for a spell, so around during the week doing the daddy thing. I've been meaning to call Jimmer, too.

Re; the blue challice - Yep. I just saw another today that someone has had for a while and his looks just like mine. I'm putting it totally under a ledge since less light supposedly turns it blue. IMO if you have to tell someone what color a coral is, then it isn't that color. Another month and I'll probably sell it to someone else who wants to try coloring up a LE frag. I've got other more interesting challices that I'm happy with.

as i'm sure you guys know...chalices change color more than my chameleon does! i've got a piece i traded to rob(jusreefin) this past meeting and when it was in my 12g it was blue with pinkish-red striations. in my 6g the colony is almost entirely blue. these guys change for just about any reason possible.

Yep, I have a piece of Rob's too, so does Plankton and they all look different (Plankton's frag is now peach colored!).

The Tyree LE 'Blue Challice' is actually an Echinopora which I don't believe change as dramatically as the Echinophyllias. I have seen several now and they all look the same - none blue.

I have seen (in person) a blue Echinophyllia by the way and believe me I'm after a piece of it :D! The crazy thing is the guy who has it is letting it color up, it already is looking sweet :eek2:

Jacob, the piece Danny is talking about is one he gave me not one I gave him :)

Danny that piece you gave me is a trip. It has some pink highlights but the actual color is hard to describe, it's like it's not even a color :) if that makes sense

Wait until you see the new one I picked up. It is about 10" round and is Red with some Green and a Purple rim!!

Hmmm, here's a pic of my blue chalice before my DSB crashed and killed it. It's under 250 watt 10 DE MH's.

What color would you call it?

And here are some frags I was growing out:

The original frag was tan when I got it. I had it under high light, because I didn't "know any better." :D I got the frag from another reefer (who originally bought it from Tyree), who didn't really say anything about "low light." By the time I found out it was supposed to be a low-light coral, it looked like this.

FWIW,
Kevin

Anemone, your top pic is a much bluer than the couple that I have seen but still looks purpleish to me.
But still not like this http://reeffarmers.com/limitedechinopora.htm

and definitely not like this:

I guess I will really have to deprave mine of light (doing so now) and see what happens I'm giving it another month to see if it colors up (or would it be down in this case). I don't know if I'll have enough patience for it to grow if its not getting any light, although it is a big frag so maybe I can wait it out...

LOL the day I get put on a waiting list for a Coral Please Shoot me LOL HAHAHA. I'm sure it's more then I want to pay but shoot me a PM
