Changed GFO- SPS loosing flesh

Hello all!

I changed my GFO a couple days ago because I saw my Po4 rising over .02 and now my superman SPS is loosing flesh on about a 1/4 inch of its tips....

I took GFO reactor offline, could this be causing it? How long should I keep it off?

Thanks

Alk and probably an overdose of GFO are potential problems. GFO will lower alk if there is either too much used or no p04 to bind to.

+1 on alk

in my experience, they die from the base up, when too much po4 is removed at once, if its from the tip then alk ...

hope you find the culprit soon :)

GFO is notorious for causing RTN. I suspect it's related to quickly stripping the water of phosphates, SPS need some to grow.

Having some measurable phosphates is fine, are you having a significant algae problem?

I started getting some Cyno and tested Po4 which was higher than normal.

DKH stays pretty constant at 8.6 with my CA reactor.

I've also had GFO change cause massive damage to corals before. I think the key is staying stable with change intervals and not overdosing. As stated, new GFO can cause a fairly large and very sudden Alk drop, as well as stripping all PO4 out of the water column. Fast change is always bad in reefing IMO. Only thing that happens fast are bad things...

hmm, that seems odd. You said you did a water change to, did you use a new salt, new bag of salt? Cold water change? Is there anything else that could have caused this issue?

feed them. short chained AAs

if they recover FAST, u have removed too much po4,

if not, something else is causing it.

at least u can eleminate one posibility this way.

SAme salt and method of water change. I usually change water one day and then Carbon and GFO a couple days later, only difference is that I used a little more GFO this time due to the Cyno.... that's why I traced the problem back to the GFO.

I have been using "Fuel" as my AA will those work?

It could be a huge amount of growth in a couple of days....
