Changing anemone Q's

I posted this in another forum yesterday and didnt get much of a response, so Im trying here.

I currently have a pink tip haitian anemone that my mated false-percs host. That nem is getting so big, and at the rate he is growing, within the next 6 months he will outgrow my tank. When he is outstretched, his tentacles are close to a foot long. Tonight I started thinking about getting the clowns a new nem and was wondering what kind I could get. I LOVE the h. crispas and I like that their tentacles dont get near as long as other nems. I also love RBTAs. What is the likelyhood of my clowns accepting a new nem after being in my haitian since the day I brought the nem home? I dont want to get an anemone that the clowns dont usually host (again), and then they resort to hosting my powerhead, xenia, or frogspawn. I also dont want a nem that gets totally gigantic since I only have a 40L. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

And to clarify, it doesnt bother me if the base of the new anemone gets slightly larger, its the length of the tentacles that worries me.

The only anemone I know that stays smallish, is the RBTA with the white mouth. They are pinker than the ones with the green mouth. If your clowns are in one anemone, they would most likely take to another. I would'nt recommend it without proper lighting though, what type do you have?

These are some old pics..LOL, cool to look at them again though...:)

I think I have a few more, I'll look.

I love that shrimp :)and the detail of the nems bulbs.. so beautiful

is it just me or do they remind you of boobies? or maybe those big bouncy balls tied to a rubber band you could pound away on as a kid for hours making that "boing" noise with them

OH WOW Carole, those are amazing pictures!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share them!! I like the pinker color of them (Im madly obsessed with pink), and Ill have to look into getting one. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! :D

Just to warn, my BTA is over 8" across and from base to tip is probably about 8" also...he takes up a lot of space, but is very accepting of neighbors. One is surrounded by leathers and none of them seem to mind much at all. H. crispa(sebae) is beautiful, but they get really large also and are one of the harder anemones to keep.

Truthfully, any natural hosting anem is going to get way big and will need a good portion of a 40G for itsself.

InLimbo87, that anemone is beautiful, and the pics are amazing!

My anemone already takes up almost half of my tank, and Im fine with that. Here is my problem... When he is completely outstretched, like a foot long, sometimes his tentacles get sucked into my overflow pipe. One day he got stuck in a powerhead, and the next day he went down the overflow pipe and landed in my filter sock. Im not worried about the base of an anemone getting 8 inches, its the tentacles. As long as an RBTA's tents dont get like a foot long, then thats cool with me :)

The best way to prevent this is gutter guard. BTA's are movers and they are rock dwellers. They'll stay on your rock structure, but move around. If you were having trouble keeping a condy out of the PH, you could end up with the same or even worse issues with a BTA(because of their wandering nature). There are different methods to combat this(regardless of anem) and if you search for them, you can find the solutions on here or at RCF. I think the solution was the non-metal type of gutter guard. You can find at Home Depot and is meant for gutters of your house. You'll have to wrap your pump/ph intakes with it, but it'll save you in the long run.

I have a roll of a plastic mesh-like gutter guard at home that I used for the back of my canopy. Ill try that and see what happens. Thanks for the tips!

Make sure you get the right technique...I don't personally know it and I think there is a trick to keeping it so the anem won't get sucked in...supposedly you may have to clean your inakes a little more often to keep it clear of finer particulates(the one that would otherwise go right through the intake without the guard), but it is worth it to keep an anem happy and unshredded:).

Becca I have 4 RBTA's at home which are small but they are clones so they all look like LT's but bright red. You can have one if you want... let me know and i'll bring one to the store.
