DI resin by itself will never produce the same quality of water as carbon/RO/DI. There are contaminants like nitrates, phosphates and silicates that are very weakly ionized and may not be treated well with DI only. Plus DI resin can never be recharged back to 100% in the home. It requires heat in the recharge process among other things and its not normally worth the effort. Not to mention the hazardous materials required to recharge the resin, what are you doing with them if not dumping down the drain? Even neutralizing them requires more water and chemicals.
DI has a finite capacity and by itself you will be recharging constantly unless you have a atap water quality that is almost pristine to begin with which most of us don't. If your tap TDS is over 25 don't even think about it.
RO Waste does not have to be wasted, it can go in the pool, washer, on the lawn etc.
