Chattering Wavebox

Hello,

My Tunze Wavebox had been working fine for about six months but recently the pump started making a chattering noise and the flow generated by the pump was no longer capable of sustaining a wave.

I took the pump out to clean it. I didn't notice any buildup on the impeller or housing but went ahead and soaked it in vinegar and cleaned it per the instrutions in this forum. The problem persisted after cleaning, however I noticed that if I dialed down the screw knob all the way the impeller chattering will cease. It can generate a wave in this setting but with the power of the pump dialed down all the way, the wave is not very impressive. When I try to increase the power using the screw knob, the intermittent chattering will resume and the wave will be disrupted and diminished.

Thank you for your assistance.

How old is the wavebox? Does it have the oldest drive unit that had brake shoes or the newer unit 6200.70 with no brake shoes?

I would make sure the hole in the center of the drive is free of obstructions, this is where water enters to cool and lubricate the motor. I would also be sure the upper bearing (3000.620) is clean and not stuck to the magnetic rotor of the prop assembly.

I checked the hole in the center of the drive unit and it is clean. The upper bearing doesn't have any sediment buildup on it and the drive unit turns freely by hand and spins at low power.

When I increase the power, it appears to be out of sync with the magnetic motor and the drive unit spins only a couple times a second in choppy motions making a clicking or chattering noise.

I think the motor has a defect of some sort. If you send it to me we will replace it. I am guessing some of the windings are bad and it isn't energized enough to suspend and move the prop.
