Cheapest Base rock?

was? are you still happy with it?

Okay...I WAS very happy with it as base rock when I bought it 3+ years ago. Now I'm STILL happy with it as live rock. One of my HIrocks has a killer tunnel through it that my Yellow Watchman Goby loves. I seeded my 100 lbs of HIrocks with about 50 lbs of live rock.

Hey Steve, how did you make that rock. that looks pretty cool

5 parts crushed coral, one part portland. Shape it, then cure it. Too easy and water pours right through it. You can really make some shapes that would be impossible to find. That piece is about 24x30 and about 50 lbs

Yeah, that is a really nice looking shelf.

Once they color up, you'll never know!

you happy with yours? do you think it looks like real live rock now?

No complaints here. Initially, I bought the hirocks just to add bulk underneath real LR, so I went through a lot of trouble to stack everything so the hirocks were mostly hidden. After seeing how well the few exposed areas colored up, I really shouldn't have worried with it. It is near impossible to tell them apart, and in a few more months, I don't think you'll be able to.

I had a similar post lastnight about base rocks.. I was considering getting the hirocks, but decided im going to go with reeferrocks instead. i like the shape better, and he sends a pic of what he'll send you so there are no surprises :)

here some of the base rock i have. its pure limestone, the exact stuff they use in florida to aquaculture rock. the rock looks more yellowish in the pictures. my flash wouldnt work right and the rocks are dirty. ill post more later. and ill try and get some of the ones i put in my tank. they already have coralline on them.

I bought 350 lbs of reeferrocks last week. www.reeferrocks.com

Prices were amazing and I was able to pick individual pieces of sizes and shapes I wanted. All this via email, with pics.

Capt. Jer (the owner) is great, gave me extra for free, returned calls emails immediately and shipped next day.

I'm not big on "live" rock anymore. After a few years, I have all the species want in my tank, and none that I don't. Starting my new tank, I wanted to start with base rock, and have done this for a few years now. Now unwanted hitchikers, no cure, no Qt, and as you see, it's indestinguishable after 6 months.

i got about 30lbs of hirocks just to check them out. one of the guys in our reef club bought a ton from them and then let our club get what he had left. i love it. after a few months you cant tell any differance. the shapes are great. i move some stuff around in my tank the other day and i couldnt even tell which ones they where anymore

what i love about the stuff i bought is you can easily drill and chisel it into shapes you want. or lay it all out in the garage and arrange before you put it into the tank. the stuff i chiseled off also made great rubble rock for my pods in the refugium.

nikonosis,
Where is Orange Park? If you're anywhere near south florida you should be able to get all the base rock you want from a quarry or a landscaper. They sell the stuff for landscaping yards. I don't know the prices since I usually just dig the stuff up out of my yard but I imagine it's very cheap.

I bought Hi-Rocks

I bought Hi-Rocks

I bought Hi-rocks. The picture is true to form for me - after I soaked it in water and vinegar. The rock is real nice after you get all the mud/calcium or whatever it is - off. The only problem I had was the time to get it was about 2 weeks.

SaltyNovice
