i have a xenia frag in my 10g nano and it takes nutrients from the water.

my question is if i put cheato in my tank will the cheato take all the nutrients for itself and leave my xenia to die off "melt" ?

tagging along; I'm wondering if this had something to do with the "mysterious xenia die-off of '07" I encountered...

I have both Cheato and Xenia in my tank...no problems with them killing each other off. NYIntensity whats your secret to killing it off cause I mine wont stop spreading lol(I hate that crap)

they shouldnt have to compete with eachother. cheato essentially being an large algee/ plant and xenia being a soft coral, they are using differant types of "nutrients" and in differing amounts. they are totally differant types of creatues.

If I knew the secret, I would have stopped it. One day it just started melting; nothing else in the tank was affected.

I'd like the secret to xenia die-off as well. My whole day Saturday is earmarked for xenia removal from my reef. :(

On Topic: I don't think it's likely that either cheato or xenia will make your water nutrient poor enough to crash the other.

Xenia is a strange creature. It can, and may, and will grow nuts. It can, and may just die for no reason.

Ok.. not sure if this will work for anyone or not.. but in my experience Xenia stops pulsing when the ph drops below 8.3... it starts to melt when the dkh drops to 7 or lower...

ive had my xenia for a while now and its doing great!

im thinking about gettin an aqua clear 50 or so hang on filter just for cheato and mayb some rubble LR.

sound good?

If you feel like sending any xenia down here, I''d be more than happy to take it...I liked the way it looked.

I'm not sure if you were referring to me, but wait 'til tomorrow. I'm going to finish cleaning the glass tonight and take some pics that will highlight just how invasive this stuff can be. I really wish I had never introduced it to my tank.

Had mine 3 weeks, already split twice! Had to isolate it this morning to the middle with nothing around it! I have been hearing alot of xenia horror stories about how fast it spreads, now I see. Lots of chaeto , no problem.

I have to frag my Xenia each and every saturday when doing WC, if I let it go for a few months I'd hate to see what my tank would look like. If you stay on it each week it's an easier task.

I hear Fluke Tabs will kill Xenia and know of a few pros who do it successfully for tanks where the stuff ran wild. Need to run carbon and do water changes but it works from what I've seen.

I do like the stuff but if I had to do it all over again I'd just do a zoe only tank...dang I like that coral a lot:)

Ive found xenia will often times prefer to grow upwards on your rocks so if you limit how far it can spread up it at least slows it down...

I'll take any and all :)
Me to !!!!!! I've been considering buying this but mabe not after reading horror stories about how bad it can be.

I use xenia as a canary in the coal mine so to speak. I run my tank pretty nutrient poor so it does not grow fast. If it starts growing faster I know I am starting to have a probem. Same with the PH and no pulsing. I have had a small frag in the tank now for about 3 months and it has barely grown. For me and my tank that means all is well.
