in the business I am in I have no problem cold calling for sponsors for prizes and what not. I do event organization in the new business. So i could help even though I have no tank :-(.

the biggest problem is URS isn't a club. i don't doubt if you ,or someone rented out space, and payed speakers out of you' re own pocket they would be interested to support it. frag swaps work because they are financilly motivated.

Lately participation in swaps in this area has been low compared to the past from my perspective. Don't know what it would take to move it forward.

It takes a lot of effort of quite few people to pull an event like this off. not to mention the money involved. I sure would love to see it in WNY.

NCPARS has pretty good swaps three or four times a year. Sometimes they are at the high school in Williamsport, PA, and others are at ThatFishPlace in Lancaster, PA. They've got one coming up on the 26th at TFP. It's on fragswapper.com if anyone wants to look at what's available. http://www.ncpars.org/

The last one I went to had great stuff with only a couple of tickets sold in the raffle. I had to get the kids selling tickets to start hawking them before the drawing or there were going to be gift $25 certificates and Marco rocks with no tickets.

The swap on the 26th has 176 people registered to attend and 23 listing corals on Fragswapper.

I've been to one. Oh yeah... I'm a founding member of NCPARS, too.
That's why I know it's possible to have a fantastic swap in upstate/western NY. For one reason or another... this area has a heavy concentration of reef aquarists. The number and quality of LFS's in this area PLUS the activity in this forum demonstrate it.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are missing the entire point of this thread.

So what exactly is the point Gary. You started a thread about a great looking event that another club has and suggest that this could be done here too...

Are you offering to coordinate the event? What is the budget and how do we raise the funds required to hold such an event? You are a senior member of this "Club", how can the junior members help?

I agree that there is probably an above average concentration of reefers in the Upstate NY area and an event like this could be very successful. Without the structure of an organized club how does anyone get involved. This club has zero leadership to begin the process.

Even if it's just show up at people's houses, or the back room of a restaurant, to start the ball rolling it'd be helpful. I don't think renting a Hilton Ballroom or two for frags swaps is the answer in '13.

I'm a member of a few clubs of this type, from simple charities to things as complex as the flight club where I'm a member of to use aircraft, it can be as big or as little as we want.

If people want to turn URS into something more, I'll help. But I think we need to start an informal, but regular, meeting somewhere at given intervals. Dues/money aren't a great idea until we can show a benefit; let's get something established before we put that out there.

If you've got a vision beyond that Gary, let 'er rip, and I'll help where and how I can.

But, that's what *I* take from this thread.

I agree. I enjoy the frag swaps at the LFSs, but they are pretty cramped, and no place you would want to spend the day meeting and discussing the hobby.

If we can find a location that is somewhat central and an easy drive, we could then look for cheap or free spaces that could be covered with an entry fee.

The earlier suggestion of Henrietta is a good start, with it being at the junction of two interstates.

I've been involved in trying to "organize" URS at least a couple of times.
This thread pretty much proved to me not much has changed in the way people think around here. Don't misunderstand me- I'm not mad, I don't think it's "good" nor "bad". It is what it is.
Does URS have to "organize" to hold an event like the Ohio one?
Probably at least somewhat. I mean... even this thread is a mess.

I no longer have the time or desire to try and convince people around here otherwise. It's easier for me to go to someone else's party

LEAR has less the 20 members, We meet at Bars and Members houses, He had no bank when I booked the first swap which was 1200 give or take. It was Right timing and handful of People that have been in the hobby a long time just pounding the pavement so to speak. We want to remain a small club, we're "Friends with Fish Tanks" and that seems to work well.
