Check your test kits!

Seriously, if you want to try to salvage any of that SPS, give me a call and stop over. My flow is lacking but as far as I can tell my params are acceptable. Maybe it's too late, but just throwing it out there... I don't think I'm busy today or tomorrow.

Alternatively, you could just mix up a fresh batch of SW disconnected from your system, drop in a heater and powerhead, and you could borrow a piece or two of my LR for bio.

I'm going to disconnect the frag tank from the system and try and save whats left. I'm not going to run it with any liverock, I'll just change some water out daily like I used to in my nano.

Its funny - the acros are much healthier than the montis, which is opposite of what I'd guess.
 
Be careful if you do decide to do the vodka dosing, I had a real nasty cyano bloom that I can't get under control still. Sorry to hear about the troubles you're having too, I hope it gets better for you soon. And when it does, we'll have frags for you to start stuff back up again.

Yeah, guess that would help... Reactor is running, but so far the nitrates are the same. With the level that I have, this could take a week or so to break in. :(
 
I'd be utterly shocked if this doesn't help you out. I mean, running a reactor force feeds the nitrates through the media, so I don't know how it could fail as long as your sure you've got proper flow through the reactor and bought the correct media ;)

oh, and be glad you took off this week. not that it's really your responsibility, but we got word that we're dealing with a failing HD on qdhq1a22. and the box supposely isn't covered by Pomeroy. I've got my doubts about a 4-day weekend for me/Eric. :rolleye1:

Preaching to the choir... new servers have been requested in the past 3 budgets to no avail... maybe now they'll wise up... but probably not. With this budget it's probably seen as a 'luxury' item...

Nothing yet... I'm hoping that tomorrow's test shows a reduction - even if it's slight.

I guess its not all bad - the tank is holding steady around 50, but I'm really not feeding much. I'm going to target feed some mysis tomorrow, then do a 10G water change. That's about all I can do. Large water changes have probably been harder on things than the nitrates.

On the other good side, I've pretty much beat out the cyano in the fuge and overflow areas. Just a bit left in the main tank (under the torch) and the frag tank.

The way I see it, I have at least a good month to see levels below 5ppm.

I am glad you brought the subject up. I use an API test kit. I have been battling with this kit for about two months now. I follow the directions to a "T" on all the tests. All of my tests come out with in acceptable ranges. EXCEPT for the Nitrates.
I follow the directions in the manual. Part of which is shaking the test tube for like a minute after adding the last drops of solution. When I follow the directions my nitrates are showing off the chart high. I have never had much of a problem with nitrates unless I needed a water change.
I took a water sample to TFP. I believe they were using the same kit. The girl followed most of the directions I did except for the last part about shaking it for a minute. Her results were showing very low (less then 10ppm).
So now I am scratching my head. I wouldnt imagine the test directions would be wrong. But seriously off the chart Nitrates. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Or is there anyone that wouldnt mind cross checking my water for me? I am willing to travel if any one wouldnt mind.

I have all Salifert kits and I think I have a cheap IO kit for Nitrate too. Sounds like a bad kit...

Unfortunatly for me, the bad kit was the one reading zero. :)

Nitrates are stable, the reactor is still cycling - I'm hoping a few more days will do itbut it can take up to two more weeks..

Bill, yeah they can take a little while to get going, maybe PM Bobby to get some more information from him, I know he just had to speed up the flow a little in his unit. Are you testing the effluent of the reactor, what is that reading, you want to see zero coming from the unit when it is fully functional. Have a good one.

It's showing around 70ppm, down from about 100. It's starting to produce some gas, so I know its working. I think I had the flow a little fast, so I dropped it a tiny bit to see if I can get it to finish cycling.
 
Reading about 40ppm in both the tank and reactor and starting to produce a good bit of gas. I find I need to shut off the recirc to get the gas out, but so far so good.

Hopefully by the weekend it'll completely kick in. I got an API Nitrate kit since they seem easier to read for levels over 10ppm, and I'll save the salifert until the reactor is reading 0.
 
Hope your tank comes back soon, and when it does I'll have some cap for ya!

Glad to hear it, the Iwasaki bulbs are really impressive. I haven't seen anything as intense in a 175SE and most 250s.


Joel - the gas is pure nitrogen at this stage, later on it's hydrogen sulfide at which point you have to give it more nitrates or remove some sulfer. I can't wait to get to that point. :) My fish will be really happy when I can feed them like mad again.
