Chevron tang

I just added a chevron tang about three days ago and I will not eat frozen food. The lfs where I bought It said they feed rods food which I already use so thats not the problem. The good thing is that it will eat dried sea weed all day long. So my question is will they get enough nitrition form just dried seaweed, is there a difference between red, green or brown alge?

Try a mixture of seaweeds and i'm sure when it settles it will begin to take frozen. Remember they are mainly herbivors in the wild and its in our tanks that they take more meaty food.

should I feed dried seaweed every day, I have a blue and purple tang also and I was onyl feeding once or twice a week because they eat alot of frozen food.

mine eats everything ! loves nori sheets but also eats flake from my fingers. and frozen mysis like crack

Tangs are primarily herbivores. The ones I have seen in the wild graze pretty much continuously. I would recommend offering nori to all of your tangs on a daily basis. Keep in mind that nori has a good phosphate content, so pulling out any leftovers is important. I prefer the unroasted nori because it doesn't degrade in the water column as fast as the dried stuff. Varying the colors is also advisable.

That is great that your other tangs are eating a lot of frozen. Still, it is widely accepted that most reef fishes fare better in captivity with multiple feedings a day rather than less frequent, heavy feedings. I think surgeonfish are no exception to this statement. I would aim for about 80+% marine algae (nori, spurilina etc). You could add in a quality, low phosphate pellet such as New Life Spectrum's which is well balanced and has some vegetable content.

I have a Juvi Chevron for about 3 months now and it eats like a pig. Anything and everything I put in there, it will chow down on.

You have only have your chevron for a couple days, so he is probably still setteling in. Give him some time, Im sure that he will start eating the rods again.

Soaking your nori in selcon and garlic will help boost the tangs immunity and appetite. Also consider culturing a macro like grape calerpa or gracilaria in your fuge and feed him that attached to a rock a few times a week. So far as tangs go, as long as theyre eating and cruising the rocks then theyre fine.

Ctenochaetus species tangs don't really have the mouth parts for biting off macro algae, especially when young. They eat detritus and film/micro algae. I've had good look with crushed up, pre soaked foods. Also, let the sides/back of your tank grow some algae on them... your tang would probably learn to rasp at that.

My Ctenochaetus flavicauda will not touch nori at all. But I don't clean the back and one side of my tank and he grazes constantly on that and the rocks. I also feed a sipirula flake a couple times a day and he eats it like he's on crack. Very active species and eats everything except nori of course.

I would like to see some more pictures of your chevron tangs. Any info about your chevron would be good too. My purple tang trys to bully the chevron but the chevron has a couple inches on him so he dosent seem to be intimidated.
