Chiller question ?

Hey everyone!

I convinced my father to run a salt tank. He's old school freshwater on 55g tanks.

He's visiting to do some some trout finishing but convinced him to take a little 8 gallon starphire ADA tank home with him. I picked up the tank from Danny and its just sitting here.

My family resides in Los Angeles, actually the Valley, where Vivid is.... But it can get hot in the summer timer.

Any thoughts on a chiller? Maybe a clip on fan or nice mounting fans.

My folks run the AC at home but don't when they are either at work or out and about. They will actually try not to use the AC if its them... I know from experience. Lol. My father says rolling down the window is AC when in the car. :?

Thanks for the input. Here is what I am giving him less the beer.

I remember members talking about a junk yard with used chillers. I thin I just need those small 1/20 hp ones.

Any help, offers on used chillers , suggestions would help.

I foresee overnighting frags to my my father. Hahahaha. Lol.

Chiller will run more electricity than a fan.

Maybe just a fan (esp if he uses LEDs). Get a large ATO container so he doesn't have to do too much work other than adding more RODI water into container... Then set it to and forget it.

They have those little heat sink type chillers for Nanos with a fan attached.. I forgot what they are called they are pretty cheap.. I'll see if I can find it and post back.. Like ice cap or something like that.. Or ice probe..

That little bonsai rock work is cool..

Edit:found it but it's kinda pricy and don't know how you would get it on the tank unless you hung it like in the description or drilled it..

Thermoelectric coolers are generally not energy efficient (I think). It consumes 50 watts (1/15 horsepower), and I am guessing it gives you less cooling power than a chiller? I could be wrong, though.

That probe is nice you can install one and if that's not enough you can add one more but they are efficient.

If the tank is acrylic then you can drill the back of the tank and install it behind the rocks too.

I agree I think aesthetically if it's mounted on the back it will look better than an extra pump and hose running out/in to that small of a tank .. I would think that if it lived up to even 2/3 it's claim of efficiency with the displacement of sand and rock in an 8g it's Prob more like a 6g..

But for the price you could just get the tunze Nano ozmolator plus a nice clip on fan but the question is how hot does the house get and will the fan keep up.

I think either way is feasible and should work it's just up to how he wants it to look..

I like that ice probe cooler on a larger aquaclear. How does it work? does it just kick in when it get hot automatically?

I leaning toward a nice fan with an ato. There will not be a controller on it so thinking of putting it on a timer for the when they are not home.

Any other suggestions on nice looking fans. No Walmart clip ons.

That's a cool link.. That's a good idea to run it in the aquaclear. They have a temperature controller for the probe that will make it run automatically to a set temp..

There is quite a few clip ons that are stealthy looking..Google search brought up quite a few..

In my case, I'd opt for keep it simple for the parents. Frozen water bottles require observation before placement and if I are not there durin day and there is a temp spike, you can't compensate.
