Chiller questions

I got this chiller made by custom sea life and it's and 1/2 horsepower a 6/15 gpm. First. Is a mag 7 or a mag 9.5 big enough pump and also I don't have a controller right now so thought about putting it on a timer to run fifteen min every hour or so. What do you guys think. Stupid or might work

in my opinion i would not do it that way.

first off, starting and stopping a 1/2 horsepower chiller that much is going to be expensive for one, hard on the machine for another.

lastly, would you even consider do that to a heater? with the chance it may over heat your tank? this is the opposite side of that coin. The reason I am saying this is 1/2 hp is pretty big for a tank even up to a 180 no matter what the chiller rating is.

I would think seriously about buying a proper controller, or a proper sized chiller.

What are your tank params now that you feel you need a chiller? I only ask b/c alot of people misconceive the physics at work here.

Hey there,

I'd first recommend you pick up a controller. The Custom Sea Life 1/2hp chiller supports "300-500gal" so it will zap your temp if your not careful. Either of your mag pumps should be plenty sufficient.

Okay. After sleeping on it. I went to aquariums and tropical fish today and had Leighanne hold me a controller for $100. New in box. The only reason I want a chiller is bc my temp has been getting up to 84deg. I have lights on more then I should probably

By the way. Blakers. That colony is doing great. If any of you get the chance to see his tank. You should. Its beautiful

Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad the colony took to yours.

Do you know which controller you're getting? You'll be pleased once that's up and you know you can keep your temp stable.
