I actually tried that and it didnt work, I also tried < img src " " > and that didnt work, its an isolated issue with imageshack not letting people hotlink to them anymore I guess if they arent premium or something... I just uploaded to flikr, all good now can see pics.

Hi guys,

I'm a new reefer and I just picked up a 55 gallon saltwater tank. I'm looking to have a bunch of corals and fish in there.

I'm looking to upgrade the lighting system (currently has 6 compact fluorescents).

From what I've seen, people order either the 30B, 15W, 4V, 4R, 2G or the 34B, 17W, 4V.

What do you guys think will be best? Or is there something else I should try?

Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks everyone!

Was wondering the same thing I really like the lights most recently posted, dimmable and cheaper than the others do far..... We may be on to something here being able to dictate the market a bit ;)

I think these are the two options I have narrowed down too, think I'll wait a little longer before pullin the trigger ;)

OPTION 1

OPTION 2

Good to hear from you.

Yeah we are testing our new model, but it is not D120, it is a total new design model with LCD/sunrise/sunset/advanced heating sink/Secondary optical lens option, etc..

We are trying to start promotion the end of August. We need your review and help too.

By the way, RC members will surely get discount for this light.

Best Regards,
Sam Chen

Hope this is something to look forward to and the D120 is a very good light.

We've gone from just Cool White/Royal Blue fixtures to being able to choose the entire layout in less than 6 months. It's almost like DIY without the time and skill needed to make one of your own, and they look much more professional.

Looks pretty good to me. Why the change from a Cree DIY fixture?

A few reasons I switched:
#1) Far to few LEDs, I went cheap and think I payed for it. I have I think 52 or 56 LEDs on there with a 2:1 B:W ratio. Some of my SPS even easy ones such as plating monti just was doing horribly, my favorite Pavona died, I had a little bleaching (perhaps from spotlighting) even on my sandbed.

#2) Im not a DIY guy, I cant really upgrade, fix or tend to the lights if they need work so its not an ideal fixture.

#3) The disco ball effect, as you can see in my picture the color isnt uniform, the white/blue just dont blend well together. I wanted to fix that, enhance my color and get a more professional/clean look.

#4) In line with #1 long term its very likely I will want more sticks other than just birds nest and digitata, so by making this upgrade I have trippled the amount of light on my tank, so provided my tank is healthy I should be able to grow just about anything.

Edit:Just for size reference thats a 125g if it wasnt obvious by the pictures.

Be careful when you go with a 2:1 blue ratio, these chinese LEDs are VERY blue. When you enter a blue only part of day/night it can look very cheesy and very unrealistic. Your colors will pop right off the corals, but its just not appealing in my opinion.

2:1 blue to white ratios only provide a crisp 14k look if you use Neutral Whites, not the Cool Whites the majority of the fixtures come with. Cool Whites have a ton of blue in them already, so adding twice the blue on top of it creates the windex look.

I'm still in the market for some led lights and waiting for the recovery of my bankaccount after the summerholidays.

Did anyone try these light?
http://houyi.en.alibaba.com/product..._led_120w_cree.html?tracelog=cgsotherproduct1

I've requested some info and got a quick response.
36" programmable 192 Watt costs 428 usd...
The seller also send me a pdf document that I will post tomorrow somehow if anyone is interested.

They don't verify the bin of Crees they use. They could be low quality or not even Crees at all. They are more expensive per led as well, absurdly expensive. That price doesn't even include shipping. Why buy it when a Maxspect Razor is not much more, and could run circles around it?

In the PDF they say cree-Xpe/bridgelux.
If you pm me your email, I'll send you the PDF if you think its worthwhile.

I don't quite see how a Maxspect Razor runs circles around it?
Sure its got a nice design.
It also has more colors, but what I saw in a picture someone posted around here you can see every individual color led shining on your bottom making nice colored circles.
The layout of the razor is slightly less appealing for me since the lights are concentrated in three spots instead of being spread over 90cm (my tank is 100cm).

Maxspect is running new generation Crees at nearly 5w each. This one uses 2+ yr old Crees at ~3w, if they are even real Crees, and doesn't use actinic violet leds unless you get the bridgelux unit.

The 55x3w d120 boxes are almost 1/4th the price as well. You can run three and have much more power and spread for the same price. If you're worried about spotlighting and colored circles, you'd want 165 leds, not 64. Not having enough leds, and having them widely spread out causes this.

Any recommendations on other complete LED fixtures for a 55 gallon tank with fish and corals? I'm as rookie as they come and tried to read through the thread but I figured it'd be easier to just ask!

Thanks guys.
Roger

There are tons of options between these and commercial fixtures, and you need to ask yourself a few things.

How much are you looking to spend? What features do you want? Is sunrise/sunset auto dimming a must have, or are you ok with manual dimming knobs? What comparable MH bulb color are you looking to achieve? Do you want/need moonlights... etc.

Not trying to spend TOO MUCH but if something is a fair price, I'm ok with that. Sunrise/Sunet auto dimming is not a must have, okay with manual dimming knobs.

Not sure about MH bulb color as I only have crappy compact fluorescents.

So 2:1 probably isn't good for these chinese fixtures, should I go 1:1?

mlott: which leds did you go with? sorry ive read to much of this thread and couldnt find the page where it said.

Also, to everyone else, ive read a lot of the beginning of this thread and some of the end and several of the earlier post, ppl were going for the taotronics, eshine, and aquariumleds lights and now it seems like the most of you are going to the twilight and evergrows. any reason why? which ones are better?
I have a 40 gal breeder that I have had for 6 months so im still relatively new to the hobby and still trying to learn about leds so sorry for all the rookie ?s. It seems like most of these fixtures are all about 18", how many should i put on my tank? I cant hang from the ceiling or walls so ill have to make bracket. How high should the be?

thanks to anyone who can help me

I went with the Twilight units that had the built-in timmer/dimmer with moonlights. I know that evergrow is going to release a similar fixture towards the end of the month. Just make sure that you confirm the LED placement before your order. Otherwise it will be a crap shoot to what your light is going to look like. I would think that one of these type fixtures should be enough to cover your tank.
