chocolate tang

ya thanks, just wanting to know about how the fish is in tanks, im cycling a new tank well just finished the cycle of a new tank and looking to add uno tang and trying to decide which one. not wanting a 2 footer though obviously just because its not fair for them. something under 10 inches preferred

i was told to come here to get real life experience on tangs and more specifically the chocoltate i was told i could get info on, was i wrong . . .

Most any tang is gonna be very stessed and sickly in that size tank unless you get a tiny one. The problem is the smaller the tang, the more delicate it is and the more feeding, relatively, it will need since it is growing. Tangs are hungry beasties and your water quality will suffer, stressing the little guy and all other inhabitants. Also these guys are prodigious swimmers, they are used to roaming huge areas of ocean.

I've seen an atlantic blue tang in a tank even smaller than yours swimming happily for over two years, but ... tons of flow (40x/hr turnover), rediculous amounts of food, water changes 2x per week, and the fellow has kept tangs for over a decade.

If you can commit to all that then go for it. Even then you will most likely kill several of them before you are successful. These are the reasons you won't see positive responses (sometimes no response at all) here to questions regarding tangs in small tanks. Don't take it personal. I would suggest a bigger setup or a different fish. if the moral issues aren't discouraging enough, think of the expense. Tangs aren't the cheapest fish.

Happy reefing!

my chocolate tang is alittle on the aggressive side but he gets along with everyone now. He is an adult and his colors really stand out. I think the choco. can be kept in a 75gal successfully as long as the tank is 4ft. long and he will be the only one in there. I have mine in a 125 with 2 other tangs and have had no issues at all. I really like mine, he swims around alot and picks at the rock all day.

ya it actually is a 75 the pics for it are up in the new to hobby forum :). i want just one yang but was trying to find on that stayed a little on the smaller side because i didnt want to do the whole get him while hes a baby and then trade him in years down the road when its larger. when i have a fish for years i dont want to just get rid of it ya know

Yea, i know what ya mean. I think the choco. gets about 8-9" in captivity. I not sure how fast they grow. I have had mine for about 6mos. now and I really cant tell if he has gotten any bigger. I am going to have to look at some pics of him when I first got him.

i have had 2 of them. one lived for about 6 years. went from juvie to chocolate. took about 3 years to gain real mass, but once he did it, took off. I've learned that they are more nervous if theres not a lot of "run " room. 4 foot minimum tank.

I just picked up a 2'' chocolate tang a while back. VERY friendly and hardy fish, I have him with a pair of onyx percs, flame hawk, mandarin, diamond goby, and a 1.5'' hippo tang

I know they recommend at least a 70g for the fish I have, but these are baby fish and I plan on upgrading to at least a 90g in the near future. Also, I have an overkill of flow and filtration, everyone in the tank seems happy as can be

i have a juv. chocolate tang that looks to be starting to change over to adult colors and i also have a purple in with him. my chocolate is a punk though, he has killed a copperbanded butterfly and pretty much picks on every new fish that comes into tank. he and the purple tang get along now but took a few days of bickering. how long does it usually take for a chocolate to change to adult colors.

Scopas tang will stay relatively small in Tang standards. They are peaceful, natural grazers and not a bad looking fish.

I have had my chocolate tang about a year now. He is a little more sensive then my other tangs. He is also more aggressive then my other ones and picks on some corals. I have thought about getting rid of him but he is too good looking.

anyone have some pics of their adult coloration chocolate tangs? and also include what size you got it, how long it took to change over, etc... thanks! I can't wait for mine to get adult colors, his face is starting to change a little now

Here is a picture of mine. He is in my fish trap. A friend gave him to me. He had adult coloration when I got him. They are beautiful fish.

I've had mine going on 15 months now. Got him in his juvi color (lemonpeel mimic), he has grown a good bit and is now about 4" but still no sign of changing to his adult phase other than his face will briefly turn brown when he see's his own reflection in the glass and spars with himself.

wow beautiful nickiwit!!! I can't wait for mine to change, I enjoy the yellow he is now but their adult color and pattern is just so unique.
