I am lucky to have both (well not really).
I maintain my employer's 155g bowfront that is a fowlr, but the rest of my tanks are reef tanks.
The fowlr tank is lit by a pair pc fixtures, and has ten fish ranging from a goby all the way up to an Emperor Angel. The tank is looking great now and has a lot of wow factor BUT it's also taken my years to get the right colors, shapes, and temperments to co-exist in the tank.
You still need a skimmer a really nice skimmer if you get an aggressive fowlr tank i.e triggers are very messy eaters.
I've also set-up a 7g softie tank - nothing special albeit because it is such a small tank the salinity is much harder to keep under control, but it's a nice looking simple tank.
This isn't a cheap hobby.
