Christmas Light LED's

Just curious if anyone knows if the Christmas Light LED's will work as lighting. I know that Solaris Lighting uses LED lights that are supposed to replace MH's. I just don't know that the LED's in the Christmas Light's are the right degrees Kelvin. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I am tantalized by the thought, but suspect they aren't the correct diodes.

Yes as decoration, to get anything to live under them no.

Remember, its not so much as lighting in general, but the spectrum the type of lighting produces and the intensity of it.

In the case of lighting, its a question of Quality AND Quantity, which is why not all types of lighting work for our applications.

I have seen a ssystem where they uses those blue Xmas LEDs as night lights. A cheap alternative to the classic blue LEDs we see on the market - and since Xmas is right around the corner anyhow....

That's a good point Mike...changing the topic a bit...I read a while back about your 2,000 megaplex and wondered how that's coming along.

It works very well !!

I have used some blue LEDs similar to the xmas lights. The color is nice and penatration in the tank was good, but the power output is subpar and all sps, lps, and even shrooms began to recide and erode under this lighting. It simple does not produce any useable light as energy to sustain coral growth, just color.

I totally agree that the LEDs from Xmas lights, etc. are never to be intended to provide a primary source of lighting for corals. I just assumed it was being thought of as an alternative to typical moonlights which are more or less for our aesthetic appeal than anything.

OT: The tanks and stands are being built by World Marine Systems in San Jose - it has been an 'interesting' experience to say the least. They are severely past due on delivering and then dropped 2 of the 4 and had to rebuild them. Just spoke with them today and they are thinking it will not be ready for another week or two. Can you imagine that? Dropping 2x 10'x5' tanks? :(

My record is shattering a 150gal - man was that a bad experience, but how about 500 gallons (x2!)?
