Chronicle of my 180g Aquarium

Tanks seems to be coming along nicely Psyire. It's amazing that you get anything accomplished working in the oilfield in north/central Alberta :)

Here's a couple more pics of corals I have.

This is the Scleronephthya I added on Nov. 10th and this picture was taken just a few days later. It looks pretty much the same today but alittle bigger. (I forgot I hadn't posted it yet)

And this is the Red Chili Coral (Nephthyigorgia) that I recieved last Saturday. This picture was taken in the dark and only some of the polyps were out. It does extend them all, and has done so as I type this.

(It's glued upside down under a 'bridge' rock)

Both of these are non-photosynthetic so they have presented me with, what I would consider, my first real challange in keeping something alive. We'll see how it goes, but so far, so good.

Thats the first Sailfin Tang that I liked....Beautiful color/ patterns instead of the brown/tan stripes I usually see. I will have to remember that red sea species when I get my 180 set up...

Great tank BTW and looking good

Well the last few weeks have went by with a few highs and lows. The holiday season treated me well and I ended up with a few more books on the saltwater hobby. Specifically, Reef Fishes Vol. 1, The Reef Aquarium Vol. 2, and Algae: A Problem Solver Guide. All look to be good reads, but I haven't had the time to dive into them just yet.

I'm still playing with my ozone and skimmer settings, trying to get the exact match up of O3 and Skimmate production. I have no hard opinions on ozone, yet.

My coralline algae is growing in nicely and things are looking good in that department. My cleanup crew has done an amazing job of cleaning off all the rocks and glass.

I was able to make a quick stop at a LFS on the 29th of Decemeber and I picked up a few new Corals for my tank. 2 Red/Yellow Gorgonians, and 1 Green/Pink Trachyphilia (Brain Coral). So far they seem to be doing great.

I also picked up 2 Elegance corals, which I didn't know much about and the LFS dude told me they were fairly easy to keep as long as you fed them well and didn't dose any iodine. Well that seemed alright, except for the fact he never mentioned that 98% of Elegance corals don't survive due to some strange condition they develope when in an Aquarium. So ofcourse after doing some more researching I find out that mine are showing the 'short tentacle, expanded body' condition. I'll enjoy them while they last, but I fear the worst. No longer am I taking the word of 'any' LFS employee.

I also ordered a new camera which should be here in a few days. It's a Canon S2 IS, so I should be able to take some awesome pictures of my corals and tank compared to what this 3.1MP Kodak can do.

The major PITA news came last night when I noticed that 2 of my 4 bulkheads under the tank are cracked and leaking! Extremely slow drips, but drips never-the-less. These bulkheads are schedule 80 and look like the ones on Salvko's site, but they are grey. I never tightened with a wrench and they lasted 6 months, and then all of a sudden they are leaking? Crap. I did some investigating and ordered what are suppose to be the best bulkheads in the world. Haywards. With any luck I'll have them this week and installed by the weekend.

My shroud is 99% done being painted and will be fully installed by the weekend as well. It looks very good, and gives the tank that 'finished' look. My mom (who likes to paint) did most of the work painting it, so that was awesome! I'm not much for painting...

Anyhow, that's where things sit and here's some pictures!

Other cool news, is one of my female Bartlet's Anthias decided to turn into a male! (Male on Bottom, Female on Top)

Looking great! How long have you been running the ozone for? I love the changes on my tank when I put it on line. My ORP stays constant @ 396-405mv. I have a high bio load on the tank as you know. I think the 40w UV helps a bit to:)

What new camera are you getting? Try to turn down the white balance on the kodak to help with the MH lighting.

I ran the ozone for about a week in the middle of december at about 40mg/hr and then my dryers needed recharged and with xmas, holidays, and work I just never got around to getting it back up and running. Now that things have slowed down I plan to run it continually.

How many mg/hr do you run yours at? I have roughly 220g of total water volume, so I'm trying to find the sweet spot.

This is the camera I have coming: Canon S2 IS

(I can't adjust white balance on the Kodak)

I will have pictures of the tank/stand/shroud/light shades in a few days. The final touches on the painting will be done tomorrow and everything will be installed Monday. (if I wasn't working the next few days it would be easier to get things done)

Thanks, for the great compliment!

I'm 25, so perhaps you don't have all that long to wait.

I am 25 myself ;)

I would not worry about the air dryer to much of a hassle to dry them in the oven and replace. I run mine without air dryer no problems. I have a 250mg/hr unit with built-in air pump I run it full out on the tank. My ORP controller turns it on when the ORP goes down to 396mv. It stops it @ around 405Mv. When I first put it online I ran it about 50Mg/hr for the first week then when the ORP got up I put it on full power. I do not run carbon on the output off the skimmer. I do have an exhaust fan that takes the ozone smell and waste stink from the waste collector outside the house.

That is a nice Camera you will be very happy with it:smokin:

The only real reason I am running the air dryers is because I don't want a build up of Nitric Acid inside my ozonizer. I can definately live with recharging my dryers to avoid that. I have 2x 500g Red Sea Dryers that I can recharge one at a time.
