Chronicle of my 180g Aquarium

The major PITA news came last night when I noticed that 2 of my 4 bulkheads under the tank are cracked and leaking! Extremely slow drips, but drips never-the-less. These bulkheads are schedule 80 and look like the ones on Salvko's site, but they are grey. I never tightened with a wrench and they lasted 6 months, and then all of a sudden they are leaking? Crap. I did some investigating and ordered what are suppose to be the best bulkheads in the world. Haywards. With any luck I'll have them this week and installed by the weekend.

I broke 2 haywards as well! aquaticeco.com sell them.

Bebo, I had read that you broke 2 Haywards but I figured that might be an exception. I also ordered a spare of each, so hopefully they'll work out.

As far as changing out the bulks.. I can do it but it'll be alittle work. As you can tell from the picture below, I can drop the water out of my overflow and keep my tank water relatively high. I will drain some out of the main tank to take some stress off the overflow glass.

Here's a sneak peak at my shroud. I'll have more pictures this week once I get my new camera. This kodak just isn't cutting it anymore.

It's painted with a green & white speckled textured paint and trimmed in black paint. Then 2 coats of polyurethane were applied.

looking good.. can you take a close up pic of the rock work.. i am stuck with mine and need to see other peoples tanks so i can get inspired...

Just take a look back one page, there are quite a few pic's of my rockwork. I'll have more shortly, once I get my new camera. (hopefully today)

Just got done reading the whole thread (the things you do when your board lol) I'm really impressed with all your work!!! I can't wait till you get your new camera and take new pics. Wish I had that kind of budget, i would copy your set up, minus the black sand lol Did you get rid off all the green algae?

Thanks for the compliments! I've got my new camera but I've having a busy 2 weeks with work, so I've have limited time to play with it. I do have some new pictures though...

Green algae is receeding nicely. Snails and crabs work wonders on it.

So it's been awhile and I have another full tank shot update since the last one. Here's the comparison:

Dec. 9th - 2005:

Jan. 16th - 2006:

Things are going great! A few interesting things are as follows:

Green Clown Goby hosts in my Pink Sinularia now.
Florida Ricordia split into 2!
Frogspawn split into 2, and is growing a 3rd head!
Gorgonians are doing great!
Elegance corals are still alive!
Lost my trachyphilia though? :( (Goby kept dumping sand on it?)

My shroud is on finally!

Note: The new pictures I have taken with my new Canon S2 IS, however I haven't mastered it yet. (not even close) so I know with practise things will get better. But I'm impressed so far.

Thanks!

I really like the lumenarcs, I think it's the only way I can get away with running 250w 14K SE bulbs. The color and brightness is nicer than in my photos, I hope with some practise I will be able to make it look closer to how it actually is.

The way the tank looks in the picture with the shroud is much too dark, the picture of the fulltank shot is more accurate to how it looks. (But still alittle dark)

The MHs make it hard to photograph even my 175s give me fits!

I am trying to decide between 3 250w or 2 400 w MHs in Lumenarcs (either way) for my next project :)

So I stumbled across an opportunity to add to my school of Bartlett's Anthias and I couldn't pass it up. An online store whom I've ordered through a few times posted some that were available on their site. I picked up 3 more to bring my total to a nice size of 7. However they were suppose to be all females and upon arrival one of them was a male. Obviously this had me concerned but I took a chance and added them after the store assured me that my tank was probably big enough for 2 males and 5 females. (if something happened they said they would take care of it)

So far, so good. I added them on January 18th and there has been a little squabbling but not too much. Here is a picture of the less dominate (newly added) male.

They also had a purple tang in stock that I was told was 2" and in good condition. So I decided to try him out and hope for the best. I figured if he was in good shape he would be able to fend for himself against my current 2 tangs. Ofcourse when he arrived he was extremly skinny and I was alittle upset about that. All his fins were good, but he was super skinny and had a majorly pinched stomach. NOT GOOD, when facing 2 fat tangs in the tank. So in the first night his 'mates shredded his fins and stuck him up in the top corner of the tank and wouldn't let him leave there. It's been a week now and he's doing well, the other tang's are letting him swim around (after about 3 days of being banished to the corner) and he's been eating good since day 1. I can literally see improvements every day and I can't wait until he's as fat and healthy as the other 2 rascals.

Here's a couple pics of him:

Here's a picture of my Sailfin and if you compare it to the picture a few pages back, you can see a marked improvement in health since I bought him.

You might be wondering why I didn't QT any of these last 4 fish additions... Well the truth is I sold my QT setup a few weeks ago because I was through adding fish due to the fact I couldn't find anymore Bartlett's. And well ofcourse a few days after I sold it, I found some.

I did however do a very good visual inspection of the fish before I added them. (even though this isn't a very good way to check for parasites and disease) I suppose I took a big unnecessary risk, but things seem fine and it's been a week. I don't plan to do this again.

Oh, I also added 2x Porcelain Crabs... which I haven't seen since, lol.

Big risk - in disease and in stress on the poor Purple Tang. I'm sure he would have appreciated some some personal time in a QT to catch up on the lost lunches. He looks pretty beat up. Takes a few minutes to go down the LFS and buy a small QT tank?

Yeah, I admit it wasn't the smartest thing I've done. Good news is, he's eating well and the other Tang's aren't bothering him much anymore. I should have been more prepared, even though I was told the Tang was in 'good' condition.

*Nearest LFS (freshwater) is a 2 hour journey, Nearest Decent LFS (saltwater) is a 6 hour journey. Not an excuse, I could have found a tank closer but it does make things difficult...

Psyire

I can see you've practicing with your camera, great pics!

Little risky though no QT with those tangs particularly.

I too love the Bartletts I want a good sized school in my big tank when it's finally up & running.
