I have a Chrysurus that I have had for over a year, he has already had his tail change to yellow, now he is starting to get his adult colors, what I am trying to find out from someone that has one that has made the change is how long that takes?

thanks
chris

First you need to make sure you have a Chrysurus angel as a # of other angels have very similar marking, specially when there have the Juv. colors. You should see the inverted white "T" in tail to make sure it's a Chrysurus. Once the Tail changes to yellow you should start to see the other white line and body color start to change over a # months. Depending on how large your tank is, water quaility and feeding that will determine the amount of time to change over to adult colors will vary between 3 - 5 month period. The change isn't even and some parts will change over before others, with the blue line around the face, or the mask on the head, coming in last.

I got one that was a full Juv. all blue/white/black, without the yellow tail, and it took about 1 year to change completely over into the adult colors. Even then some of the blue line around the face haven't completely come in yet.

I bought him before his tail changed and it was a little smaller then a half dollar, and yes I know for a fact that it is a chrysurus, he has all the marking, and I bought him for a LFS that I have know for over 15 yrs. I am starting to see his adult colors fad in on his top fins. thanks for you help

If you bought him when his tail was not yellow it wouldn't have taken more than 1 to 2 months to change over to the yellow, or atleast a lot of the yellow to show through. So since your have the fish for over 1 year it should have grow quite a bite in that time and you should have seen more of the adult colors changing.

These are picture of my Chrysurus Angel after the tail started to change. I wish I had taken picture of it before it changed, as it is there aren't a lot of picture of Chrysurus Angel out there and this would have been a good op. to get a bunch out there. These pictures are a little over 1 years old. I'll try and post some of the fish now as it has most of it's adult colors and looks a lot different than the fish in the picture.

I'm wondering b/c I got a fish labelled as a juvi chrysurus, but the tail isn't yellow so I'm wondering....I'm gonna look for the inverted "T" when I get home.

The White "T' is right by the base on the tail. If you look close at the base you'll see the light bar which looks different than any other angel.

There have been a # of Chrysurus angels that showed up within the last year that where very small, around 2" or so, and didn't have the yellow tail. The problem is some Juv Chrysurus look just like Juv Mac, Bluefaces and some Six bar angels, they're also collected in the same areas so mixup can happen. You should start to see changes in the angel within a # of months and at that time you should be able to tell if it's a Chrysurus or not.

If you look at mine and count the bars and where they're place it's a start to iding the angel but you can really tell when the tail start to turn yellow as you can see the white line by the base of the tail and really tell what it is.

I wish I had pictures of mine when it had to blue tail so people could get a better idea.

based on the bar pattern I THINK it's a chrysurus, but the tail isn't yellow which is what gives me pause. Again, when I get home I'll look for the white "T"

That image is from wetwebmedia and is listed as a chrysurus. Mine looks identical to that except I imagine a bit larger and a more "rectangular" body shape.

where do you got the juv size?

The juveniles and small adults have become fairly common on wholesale lists. Ask your LFS to look for you if you have one you trust.

I just picked up a very small juvi chrysurus angel today and have been trying to determine if it really is a chrysurus.

The tail is so small I really cant see an inverted tee. The fish is only about 1 1/2" in total length.

Does the inverted Tee develop as the fish gets larger?
