Cinder blocks instead of base rock

Hey there, anyone using cinder block to save on base cost and/or weight? Is there any procedure to "cure" the block. I'm just contemplating using a few blocks to save weight and provide some hiding spots. Thanks for any thoughts.

I used some in my tank when it was FW. I did let them sit in the pool for a couple of weeks before I put them in the tank. I did not see a rise in ph.

i would be concerned with any impurities that they may contain as they are made of cinder that is stored in huge quantities outside and there are to many possibilities of getting some unwanted foreign materials in them from the manufacturer .

Live rocks are cheaper than risking your tank chemistry .... Read reefski's thread
Btw
In socal 1.00 per pound and still no buyers...

My concern would be efflourescence, but I am not sure it applies when the block is submerged in water or how long soaking it would take to remove the possability of this leaching out into the water. Here is a link to some info on it, I would say to do your research thoroughly to be sure of any risks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efflorescence
