Ckeaning the sand

How do you clean detritus from bottom of the sand?

Many people use a siphon, and it works well but the how do you replace the lost water ? I think with new water right ?

That would be the optimum way as you get at least a small waterchange out of it.
Some place the exit part of the hose into a filter sock and reuse their water.

I always replace with fresh made salt water. It's a good excuse for a water change.
