Cladding a steel stand

1/4" is too thin... IMO. Do they have 1/2" or 3/4"?
Stains and finishes, ok, will look like stained plywood, vs. nice solid hardwood.

Can you pickup a scrap, or small, piece of it to test stain/finish?
What size tank?

What you are looking for is veneer. You don't need thicker then 1/8" for this. No structural duties... Any more then 1/8" would be a waste of wood. Underlayment is for a different application, like under tile floors.

Attaching... I have used Velcro and small bolts. The Velcro panels were just that, panels held on by Velcro. The ones held on by (hidden) bolts had hinged cabinet doors for easy access.

I would think magnets would work just fine. You could get an idea about holding power just by going to Home Depot and checking out the magnets that they have there.

I now have a wood stand, furniture grade so no 2x4 lumber. My doors are now held in place using the magnetic tot locs.
