Clam eating sand

I have a clown fish that keeps shaking the sand to make a hole on the sand. however all the sand that he is shaking is falling on top of the clam. the clam keeps spitting out the sand but will this kill it if i continues?

Yes, if the clams keeps getting sand in his gills, he will be dead.
