Clam in 2.5 gal pico?

Is it possible to keep only a clam (any kind) in a mature 2.5 gal pico setup with excellent water quality, lighting, and protein skimming?

only a crocea would be viable, and maybe a maxima. but these two are generally more difficult to keep than the other clams, and require good stability, which is difficult on a pico. not to mention they need good strong light. i highly recommend against it :)

What about in a 5 gallon setup? the lighting would be a high wattage PC setup. My only worry is temperature flux, and salinity problems cause of evaporation. I am thinking of adding a hang on refugium to add a couple more gallons of volume as well

The biggest obstacle will likely be salinity (as you mentioned), and calcium and alkalinity upkeep. In smaller volumes, fluctuation will be greater, and clams generally dont like these fluctuations.

What would be the best way to remedy the Alk and Ca problems? I thought of dosing regularly with supplements. If keeping a clam in a pico is a complete impossiblilty than Ill just have to face it, but itd be so freakin cool to have one in my kitchen :)

corn, its really not a good idea. clams need a very stable environment and a 2.5g tank wont be able to provide this. there's a lot more to it then being able to keep Ca and Alk in check. a larger water volume will make life much easier for both you and the clam.
