ok- I wanna get a clam in my 29- I haven't upgraded my lighting yet- here are the options- I just wanna know if I could keep one under any of these:
1st- 130 watt pc 30" (I'm pretty sure that's a no)
2nd- 175 watt pc 30"
3rd- 250 Watt MH (Pretty sure that's a yes)
4th-175 Watt MH
Thanks!

Hi
I have kept a Maxima in my 8 gallon nano for close to a year with 56 watts of pc lighting.I upgrade to a 30 gallon with a 175 10k mh,I added 2 no actinics a few months later.I just upgraded my mh to a 250 watt 10k xm.Colors change slightly each time but the clam looks good.I have had this Max for over 4 years it has grown and its mantel is allways fully expanded.I have been lucky or they are very tough creatures.
Good luck

you must remember that a 29 and 30 are not good tank size to compare. a 30 is longer in shape and a 29 is on the taller side. i have a 29g (18" tall) and for light to penetrate to the bottom you will definitely have to go with mh. personally, i think you should go with the 250w de. you will not have any problems keeping anything (let alone a clam) anywhere in your tank. gives off a tremendous amount of light. 250 de is comparable to a 400w mogul based mh.

I would use a 250watt Double Ended Bulb...in the 15,000 - 20,000K range for the blue mantle varieties, or a 10,000K for the browner mantle clams (deresa and sqamosa). I use a 250wattDE at 15,000K over my 25 gallon (18" cube) and the clams love it.

I'd love to usethat MH de, but I'm in college and have a max of $200 to spend on lighting...

$200 max. that pretty much rules out MH unless you're handy and can put together a retrofit and make your own canopy or fixture. go with as much pc as you can.

save that money until you get another 100bucks and get the ocean light. 250W DE with 10k bulb included.

But keep in mind that you'll have to find a way to deal with heat.

Hes in Michigan, so heat shouldnt be that much an issue as long as he has A/C for the dog days of summer. And, FWIW, PCs can be just as much an issue with heat as halides. I found my tank temps were more stable after converting to halide pendants and away from PC (more vent space with a pendant...bulbs farther from surface). And as long as were talking 'FWIW', I am student as well, but I wouldnt skip on lighting. You can put a nice pendant together for about $300 (PFO pendant light$99, Icecap Ballast$115, Bulb$50-80). This extra $100 is nothing compared to the cost of the inhabitants, esp. since a nice clam will run you at least $70, and the ability to make them happy down the road is most important. Trust me, that extra $100 will easily pay for itself down the road by keeping that $300 or so of livestock alive and happy. Not that there is anywhere to go cheap on a reef, but lighting, IMO, is the diff between a tank that will be happy and a disaster, and should be the last thing to be skimped on.

On that oceanlight, it come with either a 10k or a 20k.
If you want 14k you'll have to pay for that bulb alone. Or maybe you can give premiumaquatics a call and see what they can do for you.

On hellolights.com they have a 175 W with 10,000 or 20,000K bulb shipped to my house for $160

Comes with base, reflector, ballast, bulb. You just have to do a little wiring. And 250 W is only like $20 more than that.

175single ended have dismal outputs.

Heres the general rules of thumb:
Double ended bulbs have almost double the output of the same K bulb at same wattage. So a 150wattDE has more output than your 175watt. Most DE 250wattMH have the same output as 400wattSE bulbs. And on top of that, higher K bulbs in the 20,000K range have half the output of the same wattage bulb in a 10,000K. That means that a 400wattSE Cool Blue Radium (called a 20,000K, but measured at 38,000K) can have it's output challenged by that of a 10,000K 150wattDE. 175wattSE bulbs? Waste of space IMO. Minimum, 150wattDE, for an 18"tall tank like a 29 gallon, 250wattSE, if not a DE bulb would be your best bet. And FWIW, those old-style 'bell' shaped pendants are very innefective. 'back in the day' , before specialized pendants and reflectors were available, and aquarium specific bulbs were readily available, bell pendants worked because the more common 'industrial' rounded bulbs had a dispersion that worked well with a vertical orientation, like the ones still used when you go to places like Home Depot and look up. Now, aquarium bulbs have specialized 'side discharge', and are made to work in horizontal fixtures. To sum it up, the bell style reflectors waste something like 20-40% of the bulbs output. Not worth it. The quality of those ballasts is pretty cheap as well.

this is a good 250wattDE system. You could prolly part it together on the same site like I have...
Icecap 250wattBallast (new style) $115
PFO Mini 250watt Hood only - double end $94
20K 250watt Metal Halide Bulb - CoralVue $57...most bulbs like this are in the $80-90 range, but I keep hearing good things about these bulbs...so....
This would be an awesome lighting system with 'top-shelf' components that would grow anything you want from shrooms to blue acro and clams. Just a little more, and much more received.

This is relevant to me - I am trying to get a clam in a 30 gallon tank. I actually think that the brown mantled clams are cool, but anything is fine by me. Are DE MH better for clams than regular mogul base bulbs?
