clam proximity

Roidan, can you give details on your whole set-up?

Where do you have the return pump that goes to the clam tank located in the sump? Before, after skimmer? Flow rate in the clam tank? Pics would help too if you have any.

Thanks.

I have the return pump that goes to the clam tank at the last stage of the sump, definitely after the skimmer and refugium, water gets skimmed by the skimmer and then flows into the refugium, and then finally the return pumps to the main tank as well as the clam tank...which would benefit from the pods activity in the refugium :)

I am using a Sicce Extrema pump, which I believe isn't readily available in the states, it's an Italian made pump with adjustable output of 2500l/hr maximum.

But since the tubing has to travel the distance above the refugium and above the skimmer and up the vertical distance into the clam tank, flow rate is definitely much less and gentle enough for the clams not to be irritated by the flow and yet enjoying the shimmering rays of the MH above them :)

roidan, that silver clam is sooo nice. You may have adressed this already but do you feed any kind of planktonic food for the clams? or are they all large enough to just use the mh's?

sweet...

I feed them DT phytoplankton once or twice a week...most if not all are already over 3inches, most in the 5 to 6 inches category already...

and I was hoping the refugium provide some micro stuff for them to feed on also....i have many tiny critters or pods in the refugium :)

But I still think DT is the best and I may consider culturing phytoplankton myself using the Florida Farms algae discs :)

thanks david :)
great to hear from you in boston, i may be over in mit next year for a short visit, perhaps i can pop by your area and catch up on more boston-style reefing ;)

Roidan,

If you are here for a visit, check out the Boston Reefers Society (http://www.bostonreefers.org/) to see if we have any meetings scheduled. You will not be sorry. It is a great group of folks, who sure know how to reef and socialize. We are blessed with a lot of intellect and talent as well. We have our own homegrown chemists, authors, coral propagation experts, and some of the better LFS in the country (IMHO).

Better yet! Schedule your trip to coincide with MACNA XVI http://www.macnaboston.com/ and you will have an international community of information at your fingertips!

Nice....
After seeing your setup I want to tear everything of mine down and redesign and rebuilt....

thanks for your compliments bro :)

i wish to tear down my tank as well seeing great tanks in here as well :D

hi all...

my clams spawned recently...i do not know if they are stressed or just nature at work....no clam mortality and water parameters are still ok.

the clams proximity triggered spawning response in a great number of clams....

i added a H&S 150-F2001 skimmer just before the spawning and it helped to clear up the aftermath together with my AquaC ev240..

i decided to track one clam in its spawning and got all these photos..enjoy guys :)
