Just wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of clam or bivalve this is. I didn't add them to my tank just started to grow. I have more than one all different sizes. Biggest one is about two inches long.

Looks like a mussel??

Aren't mussels freshwater? Or can they be both. The shell looks cool when it's not covered in algea. Band of different color across from top to bottom.

There are definitely saltwater/brackish mussels. They are invasive in some natural seaways. I'm just guessing though based on the roundness of the end of the shell and what I can see of the color. Your description of the color still makes me lean toward mussel. But I'm no expert...

The shell shape makes me think it could also be in the file clam family, but those that I know of have always had the bristles like a flame scallop.

Interesting. I tried flame scallops before but I think my tank was to young. I may again now cause of these doing so good
