Clams and PC's

I did some calculations and that tank is one year and 9 months old at that time of the picture. That does not tell how long the maxima was in there.

So the problem with PCs is that they don't produce enough PAR?
I know they're worse than most. But...

From August 2003 AA

This article included a pic of the left and right side of the tanks, for simplicity I only used one side.

I admit the PAR on this one sucks, he must be using only actinics or something judging from the color. But a clam could still live in the top right corner.
75 gallon system
System: 4 x 96W Compact FL bulbs.
Bulbs 5.5ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ off the water.
Reflector: Standard flat mirrored retrofit kit

So what's the oft quoted PARmin for high light clams? I think its like 200 or 250...so by PAR alone there are several places in this tank you could put a clam.
125 gallon system
System: 6 x 55W CF tubes. Consists of 10,000K, 6,700K and ââ"šÂ¬Ã‹Å“Actinicââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢.
Bulbs 5.5ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ off the water.

But no one would tell you that you can't keep a crocea at the bottom of a tank under 250W Ushios right???
120G
imac120.jpg

So keeping a crocea just about anywhere in the 125 gallon tank with 330W of PC is at least equivilent to keeping one at the bottom of a 120 under 500 watts of Ushio MH?
Or to be fair since we're only seeing half the PC tank...62Gs with 165W of PC versus 60Gs with 250 Ushios (just pick a side to look at cause I'm not gonna cut that one it half ;))

So lets compare a 16 gallon high with 130W PC, to a 125 with 330W. Don't ya think it might be alright??
And lets say that the 125 pic is half the tank, so what we are seeing is effectivly a 62g with 165W of PC, lets cut it in half again..just for fun we'll make it the dim half near the side too.
125Left.5.jpg

So that's kinda like a 30G tall with 80W of PC (I admit I'm stretching now cuase of bleeding and how the lights are configured...or am I? I don't know ;))

I admit the nano doesn't have a 6.7K bulb though, but if he did?, what if you used 10K and 6.7K only instead of more than half being actinic??

Or maybe my logic is flawed?

Anyway, just trying to get my post count up there () : )

cheers,

grimmjohn

P.S. mbbuna, I don't like killing livestock either (though I haven't killed any marine creatures yet)..even if I have to learn from a killer ;) hehe. I was just ****y cause peabody mocked my "uhmm" thing, I didn't mean for it taken in whatever negatively context he took it in..just ran out stuff to say.

grimmjohn

LOL! John looks like your brushing up on your debating skills for that masters disortation lol!

On the lighting note I went with 250DEs to rule out all the question marks....plus with the right bulb actinics are not necessary thus les electrical usage and heat...IMO actincs produce just as much heat since they have to be placed so close to the water line to be efficient....

Hehe hey Scuba () : )
I agree with you man..I wouldn't put anything less than 250MH on tank I wanted to keep acros and clams in (see my sig :))
...I'm just say'n ya know ;) If ya already got a couple hundered watts of PC then I would think ya outta be able to throw a clam up there on the rocks somewhere (where croceas would rather be anyway) eh?

Plus I realllly gotta get to 100 posts so I can get my own avatar...I feel like a faceless ghost awash in a sea nothingness...or something like that () : )

cheers,

grimmjohn

P.S. I think I'm going shopping tonight for some goodies if my card came in the mail, Oh-yeah

Holy crap... Are you gonna be an attorney?

You made such a strong argument that I'm now convinced:) lol

Peabody

Ah dont let Grim get under your skinn, he is a reef club member in our club, just loves to debate....In reality he keeps a 250 De over his tank! Sorry Grim had to tattle on you lol

Hey Peabody man, no need to apologize for anything..I know you didn't mean anything by it...I just wrote "p,i,s,s,y" I didn't mean to say anything strong enough to be bleeped, just be a little cute. You help a lot of people and give good advice, and I just try to chip in when I think I have something to contribute. I shouldn't have called you out...maybe I just needed an excuse for my comment about everybody getting a chance to kill something ;)

To make up for it, later I'll post a pic of my freak'en huge (6.5-7 inches at least I swear) electric crocea that I bought last night :) and yes scuba, its 13 inches under a 250DE..none of that PC crap ;)

Cheers everybody, no harm no foul.

Thanks Grimm for debating the point that I did not care to go any further on. I also read the article in Reefkeeping magazine. I am confident that anyone can put anything under any lights. Saying this there are alot of stipulations.

MH bulbs are concentrated so high light corals and such must be put under them to receive full benefits.

PC T5 and VHO spread the concentration the full length of the tank. So to re receive that full potential you need to usually put more bulbs per square inch to compete with the MH bulbs.

150 watts of PC will not have the concentration of a MH bulb but, it will spread more evenly throughout the length of the tank.

So saying that you would have to do some math if you were going to keep a clam or SPS coral. You need more PC wattage in a smaller space.

As promised () : )

I think this is what people call "electric," not "ultra" or anything like that..but man he's big..at least 6.5 inches..I cut off the top of a gallon DI jug to acclimate him in and he would only fit in from corner to corner. Only $40!

Thats a 2-headed torch frag next to him.

Ehydo:
I agree, you really have to pack in PCs and Ts ..I don't know how that 16G has that much PC on it without needing a chiller..a MH would be easier..(Like mine ;))
It seems like with anything except MH there are so many caveats...with MH there seems to be only one..."if it won't fry you can keep it"..even then you could hide it under a cliff or something.

Cheers, Enjoy your Sunday everybody () : )

Sweet looking crocea John! And a nice price that discount really makes a difference! Did you pick it up at NSA or H2Oceans? NSA has always had some nice croceas, I havent been to H2Oceans enough lately to see how their clams look.

Hey Scuba..NSA..15%.(Oh-yeah)..they had some smaller blue croceas and a gold "teardrop" that didn't look very teary..not well defined.but then I can't see most colors very well either ;)

I swear that clam is sucking up like 2dKH a day.

cheers,

grimmjohn

2dkh per day that is a hawg, I dose full strength kalk via evaporation and use a calcium reactor, and still can't keep my calcium over the 400 ppm mark lol.....that reminds me Ill head over to the equipment fourm and see if I can get some advice on how to improve the calcium reactors performance without lowering the Ph any more than is necessary...

Yeah picked up a real sweet baby ultra max, about 8 months ago that I nursed back to health for a good price....NSA is always one of my favorites just because they always have some clams in stock...
