clams and seahorses

I'm pretty sure that this isn't a good idea, but I'd like to include one of the larger, lower light requirement, clams in my seahorse tank. Has anyone done this and if so, were they happy with the results? I'd hate to end up with a squished seahorse.

Cheers...Michael

Hmmmm, I don't think I would do that. I have only seen it done once. Here in Baltimore there is a big (pi** poor, disgusting) LFS "suoerstore" that has 2 10 gallon show tanks, in addition to the large ones. Both have 64 watts of PC, and both have sickly, light starved baby maximas in them. One has a hippo tang, yellow tang, flame hawk, and tomato clown. (Yes, in a 10 gallon show tank, no joke) The other has sea horses. The sea horses seem to get along with the baby max fine, but probably because he is dying :(

Hippopus sp should do just fine, not as beautiful as maximas but still very cool in their own way.

I wouldent see too much of a problem, other that if theres too much light over the tank, it could stress out the horses, aswell as, although not likely but possible either the seahorse can damage the clam by hitching to it, if it was to get it by the bysall they could both end up getting hurt.

I wouldn't do it. Seahorses are very slow moving and can get caught in the clam when the clam closes from being disturbed. I have heard of one person losing their seahorses tail to a clam closing on it.

Hope that helps!

I agree with the above. Seahorses are not picky when it comes to their hitching posts and new items are high candidates. Clams will close down on their tails. Also in my understanding even the clams that need the lower lighting is probably more lighting recommended for seahorses.

Thanks all. That confirms my fears. I try to get the same answer from three different sources. So I guess I'll be passing on any clams for my seahorse tank.

Hi,
I have a clam and a seahorse in the same tank and so far I have not had any problems.
I have the clam up close to the MH's and the tank is loaded with live rock that has lots of shaded areas for the seahorse. My rocks are situated so the seahorse has lots of area to swim around and also perch on. I also have a little more water movement up top near the clam and less down around the seahorse area.

I think if you take the time to arrange the tank properly to meet both of their needs they will be ok.

I have only had the clam for 4 months so I am no expert at this. I just thought another opinion might be helpful in your decision.

Feel free to contact me a few months down the road for an update if you like.

Good Luck
Cam
