clams and T5

what are your experiences keeping any type of clam under T5's (maxima , squamosa, etc.) i have 4*54 W (Tek 5) 72 gal bowfront. it sits two and a half inches above the surface. the deepest part my setup is 21 inches, while the most shallow is 8 inches from the surface. the lights are on for 12 hrs daily. CSS 220 skimmer plus enaly ozonizer have made my water extra clear. I would like to keep all types of clams but my ideal (for starters!) would be a T. gigas on the sand bed. thanks, any advice is appreciated.

The Gigas and Squamosa will fine on the sand bed. However, the Croceas and Maximas will need more light and you need to place them higher in the tank. I've had all of them under T5's with Gigas and Squami's having no problems.

thanks for the info. does the age of the clam matter? would a young giga (2"-4") be fine on the sandbed, or should it be placed higher? anyone else have experience?

Heres my Squamosa 3" and Gigas 4" and growing fast under 4x 24w t-5 tek fixture

another thing, how can i tell if a clam is not getting enough light, (but not too late). if i wanted a crocea or a maxima, where would i put it in respects to lighting?

I've had them gape on them sand bed. Had to move them up.
Keep an eye on them

I have a squami on the sand in a 24" tall tank for around 6 months with no problems. I also have a crocea around 6" from the top with no problems.

thanks for the info. however, is the age/size of the clam a factor? how upset would a t. gigas be on the rockwork as opposed to the sand? so its safe to put T. maxima and T. crocea 6-8 inches from the surface? thanks

My clams are probably 17 inches from the mantle to my T-5's. They are both doing great. My Squamosa seems to be getting adjusted to the light and has moved a little to the right from where I wanted him and I spun him around cause the water flow into his mouth was too much for him. He likes it better away from the flow. I think you would be fine to put a Gigas on the rock work but remember they will attach themselves and pulling them off a rock may potentially kill the clam. Plus this clam species will get huge fast. I will have to seel mine once it gets too big. Woth your lights you should be able to put him on the sand bed. Mine has grown almost an 1/8th of an inch in less than 3 weeks. I think you might obtain the same results so long as your water params are in good order. My calc is about 440 and alk about 8dKH. Phosphates/nitrates ...undetectable. Good luck and post some pics when you get em...

thanks. my parameters are all perfect as far as the tests say, so im gonna go for it. i hope to get a maxima and a gigas by the end of the month. ill post picks when this happens. thanks again for the info

If you cut the threads of the clam on the rock, it won't hurt him at all. Just use a sharp razor blade. I've had to do it before. I would however not yank the clam off though.
