What is the usual survival rate of the baby clams? I have been considering getting some T. Maximas and a T. Crocea. I was also wondering if you have a Deresa now. (I dont know cause it hasn't been updated in a while.) Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. I have just returned back from the MACNA conference and saw the thread this morning. Baby Max's have a pretty good survival rate as long as your system can handle fairly heavy phyto feedings frequently, and you have strong enough light. We are currently out of Deresa's, but have some arriving here on Wednesday.

Thanks,
Jeremy

What kinda light do they need? I was thinking of using 2 55-watt PC lighting (CustomSeaLife PowerCompact Straight Pin actinc blue and super daylight) in a 12 gallon nano cube on the (4-5" deep) sand bed. Would that work, or should I try 2 Coralife Metal Halide Bulbs (175W, one 10000Ã"šÃ‚°K- the other 20000Ã"šÃ‚°K), and hope they dont melt the canopy? Thanks,

Gabe

I'm planning on moving them to the 90g tank(7 65W PC) once they get bigger than 3" if I don't get the MH lights.

I would recommend Metal Halide only for Maxima clams, expecially the little guys. There are people who keep Max's under PC's and VHO's, but I personally do not recommend it. I have always used the comparison of a human living on just bread and water, you can do it, but you would much rather have steak and potato's ;)
