clams cleaning water?? a myth?

i remember once goin to someones frag facility and hear him mentioning how he loves it when he gets clams in cause his water always seems so much clearer. and i've heard about clams clairifying tank water from others as well. now how true is this?

it depends on what's exactly making the water 'dirty'. yes they will filter out phyto but they aren't much interested in most crud floating around in the water.

the filtering ability of clams is a bit over rated. they will filter some particulate out of the water but i seriously doubt you would notice any change in water clarity. if that was true i wouldn't need a skimmer

I have heard that they help with nutrient export, I think they may be a way of filtering your tank. I think I have heard that before????

i know thats exactly what im talkin about, but has it ever really been proven?

for the amount of clams you would have to keep to see any effect the tank would have to be huge. then of course you would have a larger water volume and probably need more clams .......


for a supplier getting 50 clams and placing them in a smallish system, you may see a little less algae growth but i wouldn't count on your clams for nutrient export.

read this and compare the biomass of the clams to the water volume. you will see that it takes a whole lot of clams
