Clams in the wild?

Electrobes

Montipora type guy
What do clams look like in the wild? I couldn't find any pictures but was wondering if different clams species are typically seen with eachother? Like in a 10'X10' speace would you see a maxima, gigas, crocea, derasa, etc there? I would figure not as the Gigas, Squamosa, and Hippopus would be deeper in the waters while the others would be more elevated, but can't seem to find pics pointing that out. Thanks!

I really don't know if you find different types of clams together but if they are from the same place I do not see why not. I was in Tahiti and Bora Bora for a diving vacation in November and saw hundreds of tridacna clams. All of them were blue and all of them were in shallow water. Most were in water ten feet or less. Some were almost at the shore line and you had a hard time not stepping on them. Of course, you were not allowed to take any but the locals eat them.

Some of their habitats overlap- I don't recall if they all do or not. There's some info on that in Knop's 'Giant Clams' book.

Yeah I am getting his book sometime this week, birthday present :) - Today I am redoing much of my tank and will be setting it up as a cap and clam dominated tank. I was thinking of putting some clams on the sand bed, but I think I will leave much of the sand bed open and keep the those liverock I take out in the refugium. Though I also wish to keep all species of T. Clams... I may just try for the region that constains the most... trying to keep the more natural style reef.. granted I am not sure how much clams and montipora caps overlap in regions... thank you. I have found information on clams and anatomoy in the first volume of "The Reef Aquarium", and hope to find much more in the slightly more updated Knop's "Giant Clams". Thanks guys!

man why are some of the books on giant clams so out of print?

Giant Clams: Status, Trade and Mariculture, and the Role of Cites in Management

And there are so others.... anyone know where to find such readings?
