Clams: my scorecard

hi All

I have 4 clams- each growing & eating at varying rates. Here's their score (from 1-10):

Derasa, 7": This clam is amazing. It helps clean my tank, and extends its mantle fully beneath t-5 and halides. It's growing very fast- probably already 1/2-1" in the last 3 months. SCORE: 10

Purple Maxima, 3": Kind of a weanie. It pulses a bit too much, and seems nervous around the slightest shadows (that is, of course, if a clam could, in fact, "feel nervous"). Growth is slow, and mantle now always fully extended beneath any light. SCORE: 4

Blue Maxima, 2.5": A very beautiful clam, but also somewhat defenseless and fragile. My jawfish & maroon clown have a tendency to splash sand on it, and it keeps tilting & moving in annoying little ways, evading my perfect angle. Also, these clams can be a bit of a false promise. Notice how they're always available at 2"-3", but rarely available at 4"-5". Reason: they're survival rates must be low, and their growth rates slow... but they are beautiful! SCORE: 6

Gold Teardrop Maxima, 4.5": A less delicate clam, but not as sturdy as the Derasa. Its mantle is fully-extended only when the halides are on. Also, to describe it as 'gold' is a bit generous. They're sort of grey, and blend into the surrounding liverock (no doubt, a survival mechanism in the wild). SCORE: 5

Crocea Clam, All sizes: Like a blue-ribbon eel, or Hawaiian boxfish, they'll tempt and tantalize you at the fish store. Don't fall for its neon tricks and relatively low price. They're pretty now, but will turn your tank into clam-chowder! Disclaimer: I haven't had one of these in years, so maybe the care tactics are better. In my experience, they're very hit or miss. I'm not sure why. SCORE: 2

What would you score your clams?

7 Croceas, all dead. Score 1. It might be the tank, it might be the owner. I gave it a 1 purely based on the fact it could be my fault. If it wasn't for human error, it would have been a zero.

1 Maxima, dead also. Score 5. But it was only 1 1/2"", so I might just have not been ready to care for a clam so small.

2 Derasas. Score 8. They are both approaching a year old and growing quickly. They would be a 10 if they would stop moving all the way up against the glass in the front.

I have been wanting to try a Gigas, but my luck with Clams has been all over the place.

Yup. Derasas are awesome. I don't know much about GIGAS (they get huge; don't they?). At one point, I wanted a Squamosa, but then somebody told me they're poorly handles & collected and often have pyramid snails. I'll pass.

Crocea clams are beat. Maybe they should get a "0"!

Croceas are off limits from now on. Gigas do get huge, but it would be in a 240g tank, so it would be OK for quite some time.

Why the bad feeling about Croceas I have never lost a Crocea even to PM. I think there great they just need lots of light.

When you say that you never lost a Crocea- "even to PM", what do you mean by "PM"?

In my experience, Croceas are the most sensitive clams, and can randomly deteriorate without much reason or warning...

I lost 2 maximas to PM and my croceas survived it. I think it was one of the maxima that introduced it to my tank thought.

PM is pinched mantle, the mantle pinches up on an end & eventualy the clam dies.

I find Crocea's bulletproof. Mine survived PC lights for almost 2 years & then a mouse jumping in the sump & poisening most of my tank.

The only clam I think is hard to keep is baby maxima's under 2.5 inches. I tried 3 different ones & lost them all within 2 days.
