Clams with GFO

Hey,

I was researching the heck out of clams because I would like to get a deresa or squamosa. I can't remember where it was, video, book, post, article, etc... but it said you shouldn't run GFO with a clam. Is this a thing because I generally do run GFO?

GFO has been linked to pinched mantle disease. Anytime I run GFO in the past I will notice maximas and squamosas being irritated, hence I never run GFO.
Organic phosphates are needed by coral and clams and GFO strips this very efficiently as well.

I run carbon all the time and have never noticed any adverse effects on my clam.

i have run GFO in a media bag, not a reactor, with derasa and crocea and never noticed an issue. it could be that in a bag it is not getting as much flow as it would in a reactor, so therefore it is not as aggressive in stripping the water, and doesn't irritate the clams as much.

My tank also runs gfo in a reactor and I have had no issues w my maxima

My experience is that you have to use a filter sock on the output from a GFO/Carbon reactor to catch any particulate. This solves the problem and I've had great results...

My understanding with the GFO is that the dust is what irritates the clams and creates an immediate problem, not the low phosphate (although that can still be a problem. +1 on putting the outlet to a GFO reactor in a filter sock

I run GFO had my maxima for about 4 months without any issues. But I also throw reef roids and Goni power in twice a week directly on the clam.

So a little update here. I've been battling a hair algae problem so I brought my gfo reactor online about 4 weeks ago. It's a TLF 150 with the max amount in it. I'm using a filter sock on the output.

So far my derasa and crocea seem perfectly fine. I've been having some minor issues with the reactor not flowing as much as I'd like, so I'm not sure how aggressively it is stripping the water, but so far so good with my clams.

Several years ago when PM was really bad there were all sorts of ideas and gfo - iron - got hammered on as a suspect and that feeling has been carried forward. There are plenty of people that run GFO now without issues that I really wouldn't be concerned. I have run gfo and carbon with clams without issue too.
