Shot a quick video of a large Clarion Angelfish at the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific in California. This specimen can be seen in the exhibit called 'Garden of Eels".

I thought they were orange lol :fish2:

These are 5k fish yeah? I want one or two would be nice :D

Awesome vid, that is a pretty typical coloration for a full adult, the head and body get dark like that. The juvies look a lot like passer juvies, just a brighter shade of orange. Clarions are not an exclusive deepwater species but are only common in the Revillagigedo Islands.

There has to be a thriving black market in these fish; from everything I've read and heard, they just aren't that rare or inaccessible. And their home waters are not exactly known for policing "under the table'' activity. Maybe the costs of the required bribes just doesn't make it profitable, though.

wow. Stunning. Is the Clarion a deeper water angel? I'm asking because of the reddish coloration.

I think it's the camera and/or lighting. Every adult clarion I've seen (yes, I'm old, so I've seen many :) ) is orange, not red. In fact, I always used to think how similar they were in color to garabaldi, and wonder if there was some evolutionary drive towards that color in this area of the Pacific.

Do his rear fins have a shade of blue? Almost like a large stripeless Flame. Really cool, never saw one before.

I saw this same fish back in December 2007. Does anybody know if another shipment of these will become available soon?

Thank you all. This fish is absolutely gorgeous. May not be worth the cash, but still a beautiful rarity. Next time I head over to the LBA i'll try and get a shot of the large Clipperton Angel.

Awesome fish! Mine is right about the same size (8") and is orange not red. I also feel it is lighting tha tis making it looking more red then orange.

You have no idea how many amazing memories this brings back. My brothers and I used to go to LBA all the time when we would go out to visit my dad. And it was this aquarium that made me want to get into the hobby. Thank you for sharing!

No problem! I too love this exhibit. Its probably one of the smallest exhibits there, yet one of the best. Everything from the Clarion, to the Garden Eels. Incredible.
