Clarkii and Percs

RC Clown

I read a lot of conflicting reports about mixing clowns in the same tank... Some say yes they have done it, some say absolutely no and you should be shot for asking. Well, I have two small percs (1") and I wanted to get a small Clarkii clown that I saw at my LFS. Does anyone know if the two (percs and Clarkiis) have peacefully coexisted together. Or will one type kill the other? I figured if the Clarkii is the stronger, the pair won't go after him? I don't really know if I should give it a try or not.

it depends on the size of the tank, the hiding spaces offered.

usually percs will give in.
I would place the perc in first....later then introduce the clarkii
if the percs after introduction of clarkii hides or found on the surface of the tank's water, then imo the aggression from clarkii is strong.

just my 2 cents

It has been done in larger tanks. The only way I've heard of long term success is to have 2 mated pairs. I would strongly urge not to add a single clarkii to a pair of percula.

If your interest is in keeping multiple pair in one tank down the road wait until both pair are mated before adding them and be sure to have plenty of rockwork for the clowns so that the clowns can create territory which is not in line-of-sight of the other pair.

I just put in a pair of clarkii and percs in a 55. I put them in at the same time and they stay at opposite ends of the tank. I have seen them go to the middle at the same time and so far they do not bother each other.

Clarkii have a much wider range than Percs. They claimed 3/4ths of my 240 gallon. My Occelaris were kinda stupid and didn't stay in the 1/4th that they would have been safe so I had to pull them out and put them in a different tank because the Clarkii would grab one and shake it violently. I wouldn't do it again.

I know that I wouldn't put money on the percula in that fight! My mama clarkii is almost big enough to eat.
