Clarkii OR Blue Stripe - whats the difference?

Could anyone tell me is there are any major differences in terms of colour or behavious between:

Clarkii Clownfish
Blue Stripe (or Blue Bar) Clownfish.

My dealer tells me they are very similar in appearance........ I will not be able to get to the shop until the weekend to see...... but I would like to put a hold on them.....

So clarkii has three stripes..... the "blue bar" has 2 stripes?.... other than the "blue tint"..... (the degree of 'tint' depends on the oinion of the person looking, I would imagine.... i.e. to me a green chromis is not really that green.... others will disagree!).

Many thanks,

Matt

It's a good thing you can't get there to quickly, chrysopterus (blue-stripes) go down to brook very quickly, so the dealer will take the hit instead of you. If you get them, QT, and if I were you, pre-treat for brook. Beautiful clowns, especially yellow tails (IMO).

Good luck.

Nicer than clarkii's?

Thanks for the warning...... I always q-tine my fish well anyway.....
Once q-tined, are they otherwise hardy?

They are both fairly aggressive, but even after acclimation, Chrysopterus seem more delicate when exposed to brook/amyloo on future occasions.

Both are hardy in respect to water conditions, diet, etc. Chrysopterus will be back in the hospital if they are in the same zip code with parasites.

Matt, ask the LFS to hold the A. crysopterus for two weeks. Be willing to leave a deposit.

Traveller7- what are your thoughts on A. allardi? (Thanks Matt for letting me piggyback on your thread).

Allardi are quite a bit more durable then Chrysopterus, not to mention seemingly more mellow in a community environment.

I have had some Clarkii and Chrysopterus that were absolute terrors. Have not had or seen an Allardi locally that was pugnacious.

Thanks for all the input guys! Well it would seem, from the opinions of folks here at least, that the blue band is a bit nicer..... but the Clarkii is probably hardier, generally speaking, all round.....

Aggression is at least part of the reason I wanted the clarkii's in the first instant. They are going into an 8x2x2 tank, along with an emperor angel, 4 tangs, and a pair of blue chin triggers....... so I want something that can stand up for itself!

I had a clarkii before and really liked him....... although further to reading the replies here I am not altogether sure that he wasn't a blue bar 'chrysopterus' clownfish........

I'll see can I dredge up an old pic?

Thanks,

Matt

There are clarkii with two stripes (mostly from Vanuatu, I think) but the middle (second) stripe is much wider.

Here is one of my bluestripe females, about 5".

Well I got the pair of clarkii clowns...... the blue stripe pair were in the tank next to them..... as far as I could see they were practically identicle!!! Except for a slight blue tinge on the "blue stripe" pair.....the clarkii's are of the "yellow tail" variety, and are a nice size...... male is about 2" and female about 3"........

The clarkii's were also slightly bigger than the blue stripes..... that swayed me also, but their reputation for being generally more hardy is ultiamtely what swayed me.....

Thanks for everyones input - I'll try and get a picture of them later ;)

Matt

You can get really beautiful clarks as well as chrys,
My old female clarks was just as aggressive as my new chrys.

Heres a pic of how my chrys female has coloured up over the last 3 months and an older pic of my beautiful clarks.

interestingly when I got these chrys and asked for an id, Phender and a few other notable rc members said these were akinydos,(and you can see why, they are from vanuatu), Ron popeil said they were chrys, but then changed his mind, so did I.

Now I reckon that they are definatly chrys, she has blue stripes.
oh and she is a real meany.:D
