I'm assuming your 40 gallon has already cycled. If not I don't recommend putting in critters yet. That being said I am very fond of Mexican Turbos. They are eating machines so you don't need many. Say five. Throw in some others if you wish. Maybe some astreas. I do not like hermit crabs because if a snail lands on its back and cant turn over the crab will eat him. Instead of crabs cleaner shrimp do a good job of cleaning up left over food. So a couple of those will do. If in the future if you are plaqued with bubble algae I recommend an emerald crab. They will also eat left over food. When your tank matures you may want to add a urchin. These are great as often you will find weird algaes popping up that the snails and emerald crab won't take care of. You'll notice I'm very frugal about clean-up crews. I feel people over do them and end up starving the critters. My philosphy is "add as needed."
Adam. Tunze has long term positive use by hobbyest. I own two of them. The Echotech is a neat new product... I'll admit that. Battery back-up, no heat transfer and wave control ability. Honestly if I was up to buying a new powerhead I'd try the Echotech. I like new toys though.
