Cleaning return pumps

Im running a RSM 250 and have the 2 return pumps in the sump. I cleaned my return pumps a couple of times after startup, but I have not cleaned them in about 3 months. Im not having any issues with water flow, so Im just curious is all.

If your not having any problems with flow then you might want to go another month or possibly two and then clean the pumps. After four or five months has passed do it again.

Return pumps generally don't get clogged up with algae and other stuff like powerheads in the display tank do. I have a DC12000 in my sump that I haven't touched in 3 years.

I clean my return pump and skimmer pump annually. I do see a greater performance in both pumps after a good cleaning.

I dont think cleaning the pump would "hurt" in any way. Its also recommended according to manufacturer's user manual maintenance section.

Yeah cleaning it never hurts but if you're not having flow issues then I suggest every 6 months or even a year like most others have already recommended.

Like others have stated, I recommend every 6 months to keep the pump running at it's optimum performance.
