Instead of vacuuming your sand bed you could just use your finger, a stick or even a small powerhead and stir it up on occasion. Do this right before a water change and incorporate some sort of mechanical filter for a few hours to polish the water for you. Once things clear up go ahead and remove this. It's definitely easier on the micro fauna if you go this route. ;)

Also, for your own sake, spend the extra $6 and buy the hand start
 
Except they get skinny and die often

Mine ate frozen pretty much from the start, so he's 5 years under my care and a chub a lub. Occasionally I put a large chunk of krill at the entrance of his hole that only he has a big enough mouth to handle.
