Cleaning your sump.

How do you do it?


I use a water python powered by my return pump to siphon my water through my filter socks. I also just siphon detritus filled water during water changes.

I symphon the bottom of my refugium every time I do a water change. This is where everything settles in my sump. 5 gallons of water per week. In the past u used to drain that entire area and clean it out but that's 25 gallons of water. My replacement water would have to be spot on with all of thenparemeters or else I would have problems. It was not fun.

I take the rocks out and put them in a bucket. Drain the sump, swap out the foam block between the rock chamber and the return pump chamber. Rinse out, clean the sump. Put it back reverse order. Then fill with fresh saltwater before kicking the return pump back on. I have fittings in my plumbing that allow me to swap my sump out to clean it.

wow, I didn't even think of plumbing my sump to be able to be pulled out and cleaned. That's going on my to do list for the 150g build. my 90g's sump is dirty and super difficult to clean out so it just rarely happens.

What do you use to siphon? Is the sump higher than your bucket you're draining into?

Maxi jet with 1/2" CPVS 90 degree and a little bit of pipe attached to the intake. Works like a charm. I think I used a 1/2" Drill Bit to widen the intake of the maxi jet so the CPVC can fit but you could use some sandpaper to sand the pipe down so it can fit inside instead. CPVC glue works on both materials.

My un-D'Smacked philosophy-wisdom; One never wants to vacuum out one's own vacuum. Repeating a repeater? Not good. Easier to twist off, dump and re-seat. Never pump it, if you can dump it.

I'm going to be doing a major cleanup tomorrow. I'll be trying out my new water change station.

We plumbed our sump so it can be removed. We only remove it and do a thorough cleaning about every 6 months. Works pretty darn slick.
