Clevers 220G Conversion from LPS to SPS

I am turning my once LPS tank into an SPS tank. I have had my tank up for 1.5 years and have learned a lot about taking care of a large tank and it is now time to walk down the SPS path like I have always wanted.

Tank Setup As LPS was
220g tank
30g sump
DC-250 reef octopus
3x AI Hydras
2x Jebao WP40s
300w Heater
180 Lbs of rock
1-2" sandbed
Reef Keeper Lite

So I had a lot of changes to make when going from LPS to SPS. I started off by working from the inside of the tank out. well kind of.

One of the things I learned with my LPS tank is it was very hard to keep my cal alk mag in the right levels without dosing and this was eventually the fall of my LPS tank. So I first step before I even though about corals was to research dosing and how to do it. So I did a lot of reading to get an understanding of it then bought a Jebao dosing pump and fr starters BRS 2part kit, I will make my own 2part in the furture. This should solve my issues for awhile and if the time comes for me to have to buy a calcium reactor imo it will be a good day.

Next I wanted to address and phosphate problems so I am in the process of removin my sand bed and going back to Bare bottom like I used to have. this should help quite a bit. I havent ever had any algae issues I just dont want one to come up down the road because of my sand. I also hooked up my BRS dual media reactor to run GFO. Thanks to someone on this site I now dont feel so bad running it after finding a link for some cheap GFO

The next step was flow. I wanted to have at least 60x movement in the tank and the 2 WP40's just didnt cut it. So I got a gyre and man does that thing move some water. So now I have my 60x turn over that I wanted.

After this I thought If I am going to have a great SPS tank how can I do it without a frag tank? So I did a lot on this and built a nice display stand for the frag tank as it sits right next to the display and is plumbed into it. The tank is a 24x24x12 rimless tank with a build in overflow and currently a AI hydra over it and a Jebao RW-4 I also got some nice acrylic frag racks to keep the tank looking nice.

i also bought a second 300w heater because I currently only have 1 and cant get my water temp over 77.8 so I hope this will help me bring it up to the 79* I want it at.

Then I got to thinking about the single most important thing for SPS LIGHT!!! I have done all I can to insure water quality is up to par but what good is that if I dont have the right lights and 3x AI hydra 26s are just not going to cut it. So I did lots of reading and research on this one. I wanted to maybe just upgrade to AI Hydra 52's instead and figured that would give me enough. however as I was researching SPS tanks all along I started to see a trend...Almost no one that had a really nice SPS tank was running LED I saw a few but they where smaller cubes with a lot Radions over them. I noticed everyone was running t5ho's using the ATI sun fixture or they ran MH...This was a tough pill for me to swallow because I have never wanted to run MH because I have always run LED and when you run LED and you have never ran MH you tend to see alot of people talking trash about MH and how they cost so much more per year then LED. Well some great people on this site helped me realize well its about 30$ more a month for me to run a 72" 3-250w MH / 4- 80w T5HO fixture then it is for me to run an led. That was with bulbs included and power. I also acounted for the fact that If I was going to upgrade my LEDs to what I would need in LED it would cost me roughly 3,000$ and after 5 years it would be about a wash between the two. So I have decided to buy my first MH/T5HO system...Hamilton Cebu Sun 72" with the M80 ballast for Radiums. I will end up running 2 ATI aquablue Specials and 2x ATI Coral Plus I think. I will probably make a post and see what kind of combinations people are using I havent used a t5ho in 4 years.

So here is my SPS system now.

220g Tank
30g Sump
30g Frag Tank
3x 250w MH
4x 80w T5HO's
Gyre
2x WP40's
Reef Keeper Lite
DC-250 Reef Octopus
Dual Media Reactor
180 lbs of Rock
NO SAND
2x 300w Heaters
4x Dosing pumps (Alk, Cal, I think I may use two for auto feeding not sure one to feed one to flush the water back out)

I will post some pictures of the progress so far. It is coming along and I have gotten a few SPS for the frag tank that are doing well. I am excited to start this new jeourny in reefing and hope to be a solid part of this sites SPS keepers community.

Here are a few pictures of the tank as it sands and my frag tank that I just finished.

Just because based on what i read everyone keeps their tank between 78-80 so why not just hit the center mark haha. I dont really have any reason and I am sure when the MH get on it it will sit about 79-80 with the heat from that and I dont think I want any temp swings from day to night.

Does anyone see any equipment I am missing? I want to have everything sorted out before I start.

The only thing I can think of is Biopellets and Calcium reactor but I will be dosing 2 part till that doesnt keep up and I am sure that will be quite some time. I dont understand BioPellets and what I read are extreamly mixed reviews. Some people love them some do not.

Also do you guys run carbon and GFO or just GFO?

I am almost done removing my sand bed. I just have the hardest part left and thats getting the sand out from under my rock work some how.

Something I am also thinking about is starting and auto feeder for the tank by using my dosing pump.

I was worried about having the same issues in my frag tank as my Display as far as LED's not giving me very good growth but I think my current set up on my frag tank works pretty well. I have a guy offering me a hardly used pretty nice 175w MH fixture that I may put over the frag tank and I think I could sell the LED I am running over it for quite a bit more then buying the MH. We will see though. I am going to take a bit of a break buying things for the system other then coral and see what happens.

My garf bonzi has colored up really really well. Almost the whole thing is putple now where before very little of the coral had much purple in it.

Today my Hamilton fixture shipped! I should have it within the next 5days! I am very excited to get the fixture in and am trying to figure out the best way to hang it.

I currently have a hanging kit set up for the AI Hydras and am wondering If the steel cables will support the new fixture because If so I can just use them to do so easily.

Well I got my MH fixture up this weekend. It looks great and puts out so much more light then before pictures dont really show it but in person its crazy also the color isnt so blue. The picture was taken with Radiums and T5ho's on and I just use the t5s for dawn dusk and they are off while the MH are on normally. Other wise its to blue in color. Also I changed my aquascape up a bit as you can see. I took in a few rocks that had Softies on them and traded them in at the LFS for some credit and some dry rock. I dont want any soft corals in the tank at all so I had to get rid of them. I am ok with the look of the new scape however I really like the added coral space that I gained from changing it up a bit.

Heres a before and after. LED's are at 100% on the first one.

I did some trading with a local reefer. I traded him a random millie for a nice size frag of Raspberry lemonaid. A random bird of paradise for a Green slimer. random acro frag for Tricolor acro. He also gave me a fire coral. Its just a rock that is encrused with it. About 4"x3" rock that is 1/2 covered in the coral. He had a giant one that was really cool so I am excited to see it grow. Im going to keep it on the bottom of the tank by itself so that it doesnt spread. Also picked up a hawkins from my LFS last night. They had fragged me one a few weeks ago out of their SPS display tank however it RTN'd in just a few days and so they replaced it with a new one. They held onto it for a week to make sure it was a solid frag.

SPS collection so far. (tang photo bomb)

"Not sure what this one is either"

Looks like spongodes (montipora). Its a real-estate hog but nice coral all the same. It will encrust and branch depending on flow and light.

Nice upgrade!

Looking good, my friend. Keep updating the progress.
I did not see if you have ATO (automatic top off) equipment. A good one will help keep water parameter more stable.

Well, every day I get happier with my lights, I have some new growth tips on all my corals other then the hawkins (Slow slow slow grower I hear) and all my corals are getting some color in them. My tricolor shows more color every day. The polyps are starting to turn a bluish color and the base is starting to turn blue/purple/neon green instead of its browngreen color it has now. One of my mystery corals is turning a very nice blue color instead of its brownish color when I got it. I thought it may be a nice one because at the very tip of the growth I could see a hint of blue/green in it.

Well I am getting a 175w MH for my frag tank tonight. I am kind of excited about it because a 175w should work really well for my 12" deep 30g frag tank. The fixture is from a guy in town, It has a really nice ballast and reflector/fixture. The guy I am buying it from bought it used from a guy who bought it and never used it and then it wasnt ever used again by the guy I am buying it from. The fixture looks like its never even been used too so thats nice.

Well today I noticed a huge crack on the brace of the tank that has separated. So I'm going to have to replace the tank. They are going to warranty it for me but that is a huge pain and I am kind of upset about it.
