Clicking sounds...

I keep hearing clicking sounds coming from my tank. I have not put in any pistol or snapping shrimp. I suspect it is the CBS or a fish "kissing"/nipping something but the thing is that it also happens when all the fish and shrimp are out for feeding time. A secret snapping shrimp, perhaps?

I had a mantis shrimp in my tank for two years and I never did lay eyes on him until just before I took the tank down. Just because you don't see him doesn't mean he's not there. Could be a pistol or a mantis.

Yep, some small species of mantis shrimp rarely ever leave their burrows and only grow to a max size of 2" or so. I assume you have locally sourced live rock?

My first tank had a Randles Pistol hitchhike in. Iirc they don't get over a 1/2" in size. Loud little guy. I loved hearing him

Where'd your live rock come from?

It could be powerheads making the clinking noise. It was in my case.

usually night time clicking is a mantis, sometimes a pistol which also can be a hitch hiker.
Watch for a small burrow w/ a growing collection of snail shells...

With actual live rock or man made rocks that were cultured in the ocean you are somewhat likely to get some pistol or mantis shrimp as hitchhikers.
The sounds they make are quite distinctive and more high pitched than the sounds fish make. It kind of sound like the cracking of a glass panel.

My guess is it's a pistol shrimp; if it bothers you you could set up a trap at night with a piece of shrimp as bait.

If you happen to have Koralia power heads hooked up to wave makers, it's what caused it in my tank. Not every time, but occasionally it happens. Thought for sure I had a hitchhiker that survived a dipping process.
