Client appreciation goes a long way, especially in this hobby....

Hey thanks for the replies guys. Glad to see that most people feel the same way I do / did.

@Ocean Mang, It was a plain cb box with a Bubble Magnus sticker on it. Inside this box there were 2 other boxes.

I think you should be happy that you can spend $5000 a year on your reef hobby...some of us haven't spent that much on our entire setups over the years.

You did the right thing, be happy and know that somewhere down the line the kindness will be repayed, if not by them but by someone else.

Smile! What's an hour of your time?

Congrats on doing the right thing. Who did you deal with when returning the extra skimmer? If it was just a regular employee they probably don't even have the authority to give out discounts or freebies. If you dealt with the owner, then I'd be disappointed.

Eh, I would say you did the right thing and that is all that matters. I honestly don't think doing what is right should be rewarded, rather doing something wrong should be punished. Not worth never going back to the store IMO.

maybe if ray kept it, it would have been the LFS karma for being the way they were.you should have kept it ray, that would have been the right thing LOL !!!!! just kidding "sorta". actually this is a good thread for buisness owners to see how customers feel and react.and see what goes on,on both sides of the counter.

+1 beaun. but lets face it what this really comes down to is "buisness".were human even the people with the halos would have felt the same way deep down.we all got good and bad on each shoulder. i know how he feels in a different way. i had to get rid of a real nice SPS colony 6" high by 6" wide.instead of listing it i dropped it off at my LFS. well the "owner" gave me a measly 5 gallon bucket of RO water =$2.50. so i figured, well maybe next time he'll tighten me up when i come back in. next time i went in nothing!!! but seen it listed in his tank for $100.00. i felt like i got kicked in the nut z. so its a touchy situation on both sides. i think after this thread im personally gonna be more straight up. then and there what I want, then there is no guessing game.

I find your answer here. You didn't expect a reward... you didn't receive a reward. Why rant about it, unless you expected it?

I totally agree!

I did not return it because I expected a reward. I returned it because it was the right thing to do and I would do it agian in a heart beat.

IMO, they should have offered something to you... otherwise you wasted your time taking it back.

If you had known you wouldn't have gotten anything for this good deed would you have returned it still?
I'm sure you would have... me... an hour driving... probally not until I was in that area... It makes you wonder how many other people got a bonus skimmer and never returned it.

I once helped a stranger get his riding mower unstuck from a retention pond, and didn't even get a thank you. That is the day I learned the particular lesson about doing good deeds. Is it done for fame, gain, or recognition, or purely because it is the right thing to do? It is good to get rid of the part that wants credit for a good deed no matter how small a part that is. I honestly will never forget how much that event changed my thinking.

Props for doing the original right thing though. A lot of people would just think 'lucky me' and sell it on ebay.

change of subject but this reminded me of the time 7 years ago when i was getting unto the interstate with my one year old and some lady just decided to plow into my rear end. we both pulled over, and after waiting twenty minutes on the side of the interstate for a policeman, i still and never got an "i'm sorry". :rolleye1:

i wouldn't have expected a reward also maybe he didn't realise you lived so far away and it also might not have been the manager you spoke to which is the really is the only person who can give discounts or stuff for free to customers.
yes a reward would have been nice but not necessary.

I would have expected something in return. Its great doing the right thing, but when you save someone money by giving up your time, A reward should be given. It shows an appreciation for being a good person.

well since we are sharing opinions, ill give you mine... and dont bother to flame me, cuz it wont be worth the typing but... i would have jus kept the 2nd skimmer... done a little happy dance to myself and say "their loss"... but thats jus me

just go back in there, pick out a nice fish/coral, and when they go to ring it up tell em "How bout' we just call it even". If they go for it, you're golden...if not then don't buy or go back anymore.

It takes a little common sense and curtosy for employees and owners of stores to do what's right and show appreciation for a good deed. Unfortunately in this day in age it seems like people have lost common sense.

Had I been in that situation, it would depend where I purchased the skimmer. Big box store: Would have kept it. Small mom n pop's lfs, I'd bring it back.

+1 well said robin hood LOL!! you too pallobi i think im with yas..

Lots of strong opinions. Thanks again for participating in this discussion!

There is a little tidbit of information that I purposely left out. I left it out because it might be very obvious to Quebecers who the LFS is. The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking that they may not be the only ones offering this.

They are are offering X-mass gifts in the form of discount cards to anyone who spends $100 or more. I do not know what the discounts are. Anyway, when I bought the skimmer I did not get one, nor did I know they offered them. It was only after I bought that I noticed they are doing this.

When I brought the second skimmer back and AFTER they said thanks. I asked what the promo was about, they said that anyone who spends $100 or more gets one. But because my skimmer was on sale, It did not apply to me.

My buddy and I just looked at each other with a WHAAAAT look, LOL. In my head I'm thinking.....anyway, we just walked away.

I've said my part, made piece with myself and im moving on hehe.

Thanks again guys!

Ray
