Every lens has a minimum focal distance that one needs to be away from the subject in order for the subject to be in focus. If you are closer than the minimum focal distance the lens simply cannot focus. You could stand further back and zoom in more with the lens as one way to cope with that but your results won't be as good as using a macro lens which is designed for more "up close" work. My 100mm Canon macro lens has a minimum focal distance of about 6".
