Closed loop circulation? Why/Why not?

closed loop

closed loop

What I love about my closed loop is that you have creat circulation but don't have to look at any powerheads.

Why do people still argue that CL is not more energy costly than powerheads and kindred kinds?

CL is more energy costly. You have to overcome the friction in the conduits of the CL.

Depends on how you calculate the costs...
1.I can drill, put in bulkheads, and buy an external pump for LESS than I can buy enough Vortecs, or Tunze powerheads for my tank. It would take years to save enough in electricity to offset the difference. By then - you are replacing powerheads.
2.Additionally- I don't have to unstack rocks - or go diving into the tank to to do maintenance on the pump, but you do on powerheads. So I don't damage or lose any corals in the process
3. I don't have to look at the ugly powerheads, or have chords hanging off my tank in the tank that you do if you have powerheads!:)

I think it is just personal preference. I like to use closed loop but others like power heads. Both work so just pick the one you like.

I was going to use both, but the CL, wavebox and a single sea swirl are MORE then enough for my 300g.

I also was not to keen on the idea of drilling a bunch of holes in my tank for a CL, so I went with over the side piping. I am now running a dart with 6 flow accelerators and it is a rediculous amount of flow. I was thinking of swapping the dart for a baraccuda, but now that its running...no need.

I dont care who you are, you cant beat that amount of flow for only 160 watts.

Closed loops and power heads are about even all things considered...untill you add flow accelerators / eductors to the mix. Then its no contest.

WOW!
160 watts! That is great!
Now - here is the fun part...How many power heads, and what wattage consumption would it take to match that?

I have a dart running a closed loop on my 150. drains wholes are drilled on the back wall, and then the returns are over the top with a manifold. i also supplement this flow 4 modded MJ 1200s with the dumas props. (2400 gph each).

i have a question though. the drain BH's have strainers on them, and i think that they start to get clogged up, choking the intake down. is there anyway to avoid this? do you all use strainers? is there a way to revers the flow of a CL to prevent build up ?
just wondering if there was to prevent and remove the build up on the strainers short of moving the rock around.

here is the return manifold:
