Closed Loop help + advice!

I have a closed loop setup with one or two 3/4" inlets and one 3/4" outlet in my 200g elos 160xl. What pump would you recommend? what gph (i would like as much as possible)? Also, i want to make the flow come on and off or variate randomly from 20% to 100% every 15 to 30 sec with profilux so it is not constant flow. What pump would would work in this situation? It is very important that the pump is as quiet as possible also.

Odd, I swear I wrote a reply to this one last night... Ill abbreviate it.

1. what amount of turnover are you planning with this? to get just 10X flow, you need at least a 2000GPH pump. I would only go with a non-submersible pump.

2. Given the ammt of flow needed for a tank your size, I would highly recommend a larger diameter of at least 1" outlets. 2000GPH thru a 3/4 outlet will be very forceful as opposed to a 1" outlet which will be more turbulent and less direct. in the reef tank, you want this turbulence as opposed to the direct flow.

3.Be careful throttling the pumps back. starting is hard on an electric motor as is not providing it proper voltage and amperage. you will wear the motor out prematurely.

fwiw, on my 180, I have a reeflo dart rated at 3600 gph on the closed loop. it has a 2" intake and 1 1/2" discharge. I run 1 1/2" all the way to the tank where it splits to 1" in then to dual 3/4 lockline nozels. I will get alot of force thru them enough to impact the other end of the tank.

I would strongly recommend you revisit your flow and plumbing size. if you choke the intake down on a pump, it will cavitate leading to bubble issues. Look at maybe more outlets and an ocean motion or sea swirl device. I use a pair of the latter on my sump return and love them.

Yes, you replied on 3reef.

Are you sure there is not an external pump that is designed to run 20% to 100% w/ no problems? Shouldn't a dc pump be able to do it? Changing amount of returns is the last option. I would like to figure out if i can make it work with current setup as is.

Look on the large tank forum at the Coral Tank From Canada thread. Peter and Mr. Wilson have implemented pumps that are dead silent and that are able to be ramped up and down via controller.

Thanks for the thread. I have been reading for a couple hours. Gotta be one of the longest threads on RC. I have learned a lot. Still looking for his exact setup but i read that the red dragon 2 & 3 are dc as well as the vertex stratus either would work for my setup). Unfortunately both are not on the market yet.

HAHA funny. I put that together this afternoon. I thought for a second this morning that I had dreamed up the post and my reply! LOL

was thinking I was CRAZY!!!

anyways, a DC motor will allow you to ramp it up. that is the principle of the Vortec's.

im sure they will be expensive.
