Closed Loop or no ?

I also am planning a large tank and have this debate over and over in my head. This tank will be built and designed with the house for an inwall setup with dedicated FR. My concern is with the CL lasting decades as I expect my tank too. My last tank was a drilled CL on the bottom using a hammerhead and OM 4way. It worked awesome and Paul is a great person to work with but my tank failed. Part of it was bad design and negligence on my part not choosing a solid tank builder and the bottom gave way much like this month's TOTM. I know now properly built a drilled CL will be solid design but there still is a chance that it could fail. I know the Tunze's are a great product but I also hate the look of equip in my tank.

New question, has anyone used the Tunze deco rock's with success and how do they look over time? Do they blend in? I know they are large but a large tank could conceal them. I never see them on here.

Ruby One...I read somewhere in here that there is a man (sounds like the begining of a Star Wars sequel) who make glass tanks with Sch 80 PVC sheet bottom!!! I am assuming that your failed tank was glass because you compare it to this month's TOTM...is so, this might be am alternative for you and for many.

I Like acrylic myself. Once saw a test, again in these forums, of a coke bottle being held at one end of a long (length wise) glass tank and the coke bottle looked fuzzy from one end. Did the same with an acrylic tank and the bottle was clear! wow...I was sold. But most important is...I have a 2 yr old that likes baseball bats...swings as everything, someday the tank may get hit...I want him to be able to at least make it to the Minors if you know what I mean;)

AGE out of Texas is building tanks with PVC bottoms. they integrate glass, acrylic and PVC into tanks.

No I am going acrylic, I know there are pros and cons to each but I am sold on Acrylic if I am going big.
Yes my last tank was glass so that is part of it. My real dilemma is Tunze's or CL right now in the early planning stages much like this thread.
Why don't we see more people use the deco rocks with Tunze's? Maybe a combo would be wise too with a CL with Tunze integrated in the rock work possibly. I see so many cool flow ideas with CL but I am just a bit hesitant after my disaster even if I do go acrylic. Those seals IMO need to hold 20 + years.
I also like the idea if something goes wrong the fix is much easier with the Tunze's but I need to figure out a way to hide them as I don't care if their Rolls Royce's I don't want to see them!

Simple solution to hiding Tunze is make internal Tunze boxes that create a false compartment. Using acrylic makes this relatively an easyalternative. This way you will have easy access for maintenance as well. This concept has been used by a few manufactures. A glass tank manufacture I know has used them is Aquarium Obsessed.

Here is what it looks like: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/s...13160&perpage=25&highlight=tunze&pagenumber=2

I personally like the CL option if power is not a big concern.

For me its the hiding of the powerheads, which then need to be taken out and serviced periodically. That makes it much harder to hide them, obviously.

Very cool link Jake. I don't really want to cut holes in my big tank (already made) to do this, but if I were starting from scratch I'd definitely consider it.

That layout helps protect animals from getting killed by the powerheads too. Right on.

Closed Loop

I am a big Fan from Closed Loop Tanks.... Here a new 20.000 Liter Tank include 10 x 25.000 Liter Pumps. Thats the first Tank with speedadjustable Brushelss DC-Pumps, for adjustable movment.
The best way for movment on the Top, the Middle and on the Boddem of the Tank, with Pipes. Laminar Movment: ..... not possible with Inside.Pumps.....
